Celebrating Leap Day in Wisconsin: Time Capsules and 30 Rock Parties

There are numerous ways to commemorate Leap Day — the additional day that occurs every four years.

Celebrations across Wisconsin will feature various activities, including a cooking class with renowned chefs and a gathering at a Milwaukee brewery.

Some individuals opt to mark this unique occasion by creating time capsules to unveil on a future February 29th. A local Milwaukee establishment is embracing this tradition by curating a time capsule specifically for dogs. Known as “The Crazy Dog Mom,” this venue describes itself as “a healthy lifestyle boutique for pups and their people.”

Amanda Ballweg, the owner of The Crazy Dog Mom, mentioned to WPR that patrons can contribute dog-related items to the time capsule, which will be unveiled in four years. The capsule will include a questionnaire detailing the dog’s preferences and current life events. Ballweg plans to host an event in the next leap year where participants can reminisce about the contents of the time capsule.

Furthermore, at the event, dogs will have the opportunity to create their own artwork. Ballweg explained the process, which involves spreading paint on canvas inside a sandwich bag coated with peanut butter. As the dog licks the peanut butter, the paint spreads across the canvas, resulting in a unique piece of art.

In a separate nod to Leap Day traditions, Tina Fey’s sitcom “30 Rock” introduced quirky customs associated with the day, inspiring some fans to adopt these practices. Third Space Brewing’s co-founder and president, Andy Gehl, embraced this concept by organizing a Leap Day party based on the show’s rules.

Gehl shared that attendees must wear blue and yellow attire, with consequences for those who neglect the Leap Day colors. Additionally, rhubarb consumption is encouraged, and there’s anticipation for a special guest appearance by Leap Day William, akin to a Leap Day Santa Claus who distributes candy in exchange for children’s tears.

Meanwhile, in Stockholm, a masquerade party will be hosted at a local saloon. Sarah Smith-Prokosch, the saloon owner, recognized the challenge of attracting a crowd on a weeknight and opted for a Friday masquerade instead. She highlighted the allure of masquerade parties, describing them as a mysterious and intriguing concept often depicted in movies.

The masquerade event is tailored for adults aged 21 and above, with mandatory masquerade masks for all participants.

Regardless of the chosen festivities, Gehl emphasized that Leap Day offers a splendid opportunity to enjoy an extra day and encouraged everyone to embrace the spirit of the occasion.
