Happy March everyone! Did you read my previous column where I recounted my initial Aspen experience? We locals have captivating stories about our journey to the valley, driven by the mesmerizing mountain vistas and the vibrant, eccentric community that captured our hearts. Like many, we fell deeply for this enchanting place nestled in the heart of the Rockies. As I mentioned before, my goal is to add a touch of sweetness to your life here.
While reminiscing about the past is heartwarming, filled with memories shaped by arrival time, life events, relationships, hard work, and exciting adventures, it’s essential to ponder: What lies ahead?
What does your future hold in the “new” Roaring Fork Valley? Specifically, what are your aspirations and dreams related to athletics and adventures? Drawing from my four decades as a local athlete, teacher, and guide for the past three, I aim to support you in maximizing your mountain lifestyle. Stay tuned for my monthly dose of encouragement and advice, honed through coaching a diverse range of locals and visitors.
A pivotal element in cultivating your mountain lifestyle, athleticism, and fitness is discovering aerobic activities or sports that bring you joy—be it biking, hiking, paddling, swimming, pickleball, or a leisurely stroll. Rekindle the creativity of your childhood. Experiment with various cardiovascular exercises to find an activity that resonates with you, ensuring long-term sustainability and success. Prioritize consulting your physician for safety.
For the indomitable Klaus Obermeyer, skiing at 104 years young this winter, swimming has been a cornerstone of his vitality and longevity. Klaus humorously shares his swimming routine, equating it to a journey from Aspen to Denver and back annually. His dedication to swimming, complementing the anaerobic intensity of skiing, underscores his zest for life. Drawing inspiration from Klaus’s vigor, consider embracing a sport you love consistently.
Seek guidance from role models, experts, and peers to explore beginner-level exercises or adventures. Each pursuit offers unique rewards and joys.
Cross-training, popular since the 1980s, diversifies workouts and enhances overall fitness. As a budding athlete and bike racer in Aspen during the emergence of mountain biking, I discovered a newfound passion and avenue for cardiovascular exercise. Finding purpose in this exhilarating sport, I was captivated—especially after my memorable debut in “The Snowmass Funny Buster” race.
Exercise should be enjoyable to be sustainable and beneficial. Reflecting on my father’s brief stint with a treadmill turned coat rack, I realized the importance of outdoor activities for individuals like him, true outdoorsmen at heart.
Embrace outdoor exercises near water, as highlighted in a groundbreaking “Outside Magazine” article. The allure of water—be it ocean, lake, river, or creek—offers a therapeutic escape, nurturing mind, body, and spirit. Embrace the “Aspen Idea” through active pursuits that enrich your well-being and mountain lifestyle.
What’s your vision for embodying the “Aspen Idea” and enhancing your quality of life in this breathtaking setting? Pursue it with zeal!
