Caylon Davis and his twin sibling, Camron, share a strong sense of competitiveness, honed through years of engaging in sports. However, in a significant turn of events in December, Caylon emerged victorious in the game of life.
As a freshman at Lane College, Caylon held a full scholarship for football and was savoring one of his final evenings at home during winter break with friends and family. The gathering featured a “bro’s night” highlighted by a bonfire and music in their driveway.
Reflecting on the incident, Caylon recounted, “We were seated there for a while, and then I decided to handle the gas can. I’ve always been familiar with handling gas due to my Dad’s guidance on fire safety tips.” Unfortunately, within moments, Caylon found himself consumed by flames.
Describing the harrowing experience, Caylon shared, “I realized the severity of the situation when my attempts to extinguish the fire resulted in my hand catching fire. The sound of crackling flames intensified, and in a split second, I was propelled five yards into a nearby ditch.”
Enduring approximately 15 seconds of intense heat, Caylon expressed gratitude for his brother’s swift intervention. “My brother tackled me to douse the flames, though in the moment, I was unaware of his identity. With the help of a friend across the street, they managed to extinguish the fire.”
Following the rescue, Caylon, with severe burns, sought help from his family. His mother, Hollis Wilson, vividly recalls the distressing sight as Caylon approached, seeking assistance amidst the darkness. Rushed to Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, Caylon was promptly admitted to the burn unit for specialized care.
Undergoing a series of surgeries every week to address his extensive burns, Caylon’s road to recovery was arduous. Despite the challenges, the unwavering support of his family, particularly his twin brother Cam, proved invaluable. Cam, inspired by movie scenes, instinctively tackled Caylon to extinguish the flames.
The gravity of Cam’s heroic act did not go unnoticed, as Wilson, Caylon’s mother, sought to recognize both Cam and their neighbor Roy with a “Citizens Life Saving Award” at a recent Patterson City Council meeting. This gesture of appreciation symbolized Wilson’s profound gratitude and admiration for their selfless bravery.
Looking ahead, Caylon remains determined to resume his studies at Lane College in the upcoming fall semester, embodying resilience and a steadfast spirit in the face of adversity.
