Reflecting on Life in Fairview | The Georgia Straight Vancouver’s Local Insight

I encounter the “Open” indication daily.

Displayed precariously in a window on the third floor, it beckons to all who pass by: the South Granville Psychic is always prepared to meet with you.

When I mentioned to some friends from Fairview that I had an appointment for a session with Star Mistress, the proprietor of South Granville Psychic, they confessed their shared curiosity. We have grown to appreciate the enigmatic nature of our community, only discovering our proximity to each other through shared taxi rides home and chance encounters at outdoor venues. Each of us embraces the neighborhood for its sense of anonymity, finding solace in the three-story walk-ups, old trees, and upscale shops.

The presence of a psychic in our midst serves as a clear indicator of the vibrancy in our community.

Upon entering Mistress’ residence, I am immediately struck by the distinctive characteristics of the Fairview area. These apartments were solidly and lavishly constructed in the 1960s, representing the epitome of luxury from the previous century with ostentatious lobbies, pools, and courtyards. Most units feature spacious layouts, thick walls, and windows without screens.

Fairview is often overlooked, especially by those on the opposite side of the Granville Street Bridge, likely due to the primarily residential nature of the area (although it boasts a fantastic theater and a few excellent dining spots). This hidden quality allows my friends and me to truly be ourselves amidst the diverse individuals who have long roamed its streets.

There is the singer who belts out operas while moving from east to west, and the resident who dutifully feeds pigeons from a window each morning. Along the seawall, an incredibly fit woman walks up and down the stairs between Lamey’s Mill Road and the False Creek landing, offering a slightly weary smile as she ascends and descends. Each building is home to a resident who enjoys partaking in recreational substances, creating a hazy ambiance in the neighborhood.

Mistress is also a vital member of the community. Following the scent of burning incense to her door, I immediately feel welcomed.

During my reading, held in her spacious living area, our auras are influenced by the energy of our surroundings. Similar to the pamphlets I receive from local politicians and zoning applicants, flyers are slipped through her mail slot. Mistress’ view includes the construction of a 40-story building that looms over the upcoming South Granville SkyTrain station. Cars flow from Mount Pleasant to Kitsilano, only briefly halting for the ambulances racing down West 12th towards the nearby hospital. Mistress mentions that she keeps the South Granville Psychic sign in her window illuminated round the clock, subtly influencing the minds of the constant stream of passersby below.

Julia Dumbrell.

Examining my own birth chart—from past incarnations to future destinies—heightens my awareness of my ambitions to pursue a career as a writer. While my initial purpose for visiting—crafting this article—may have given me away, Mistress predicts that I will continue to follow this path indefinitely.

I am reminded of the day I first entered my Fairview residence. Tiny holes from past tenants’ posters left faint traces on the walls. Yet, the empty space invited me to envision the ways in which I would evolve within its confines.

My encounter with Mistress feels like a housewarming for my soul. Reflecting on my time in her presence, I make my way back to Hemlock, bustling as it was when I departed nearly an hour and a half ago. My experience in Fairview seemed predestined long before I arrived, and I hope it will endure even after I move on from renting here.
