MIDLAND-ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) – Sixty-four Chinese refugees initially traveled from China to South Korea, then Thailand, before eventually arriving in Texas. Their journey was motivated by a quest for religious freedom, escaping the constraints imposed by the Chinese government. Now, residing in the Permian Basin for about a month, these individuals are acclimating to the lifestyle in West Texas.
Split between Midland and Odessa, with a prior stop in Tyler, Texas for eight months, these refugees have faced numerous challenges over the past four years. Despite the hardships, they never wavered in their belief that they would find asylum. As they navigate their new environment, dedicated efforts are being made to learn English, a crucial step towards securing employment.
The transition has not been easy, as memories of past struggles linger. Enoch You, a resident of Odessa, vividly recalls the day when authorities apprehended teachers and a pastor, instilling a sense of fear and urgency among the refugees.
Under the guidance of Mission Messiah, these individuals are gradually rebuilding their lives. The organization’s founder, Jamie Berryhill, emphasizes the resilience and work ethic exhibited by the refugees, dispelling any notion of laziness. While many parents are engaged in domestic tasks, their primary focus remains on securing employment, ensuring their children’s education, and honing their English proficiency.
Several refugees have already embarked on higher education pursuits, with three enrolled at Midland College. Among them, Beth Yilifeng expresses enthusiasm for her studies in nursing, a career path she is determined to pursue. The newfound freedom to pursue education without fear of persecution is a source of motivation for these individuals.
For the younger members of the group, the transition to public schools presents a new challenge. Despite the adjustment required, there is a palpable eagerness among the children to embrace this educational opportunity.
Through their collective experiences and unwavering faith, these refugees have found solace in each other’s company and remain steadfast in their pursuit of freedom and a brighter future.
