Carrigan’s Journey to a State Wrestling Title
Senior Collin Carrigan’s final high school wrestling season will be remembered as one of triumph and perseverance, culminating in his first state title at the Class 3A 165-pound state championship on February 17. Despite having wrestled at Montini and Marmion in earlier years, Carrigan’s decision to transfer to his hometown school, Glenbard West, proved pivotal. His victory marked the first individual boys’ state championship for the school in 58 years, a historic moment that brought the school community together to celebrate his remarkable achievement.
A Season of Determination and Victory
Carrigan’s road to the state title was highlighted by an intense two-overtime win against Garelli, securing a 6-5 victory in the final match. Finishing the season with an impressive 46-1 record, Carrigan’s dominance over Garelli, whom he beat three out of four times, solidified his status as the 2023-24 Suburban Life Boys Wrestler of the Year. Reflecting on the support he received, Carrigan expressed his surprise at the school-wide recognition, including assemblies and announcements that celebrated his achievement—an experience that was notably different from his previous schools.
Inspiring Future Generations at Glenbard West
Carrigan’s journey, which spanned three schools in four years, shaped him into a resilient athlete, and his dedication inspired his teammates to aim for greater heights. Glenbard West’s wrestling coach, Patrick McCluskey, arranged a special dinner between Carrigan and Fred Beilfuss, the school’s last state champion from 1966, symbolizing the passing of the torch to a new generation. Carrigan’s leadership and exceptional wrestling skills not only lifted the team to new levels but also left a lasting legacy, motivating his teammates to pursue excellence with the same tenacity that led him to the top.
