Editor’s note: This article is part of the “A Day in the Life” series by the Abilene Reporter News, highlighting the daily efforts of local law enforcement, public figures, and community leaders.
During the spring break week in Abilene, while many families enjoyed vacations in exotic locales, there were those in the community facing hunger and homelessness. Love and Care Ministries stood as a beacon of hope for these individuals, offering hot meals and essential support to those in need.
Children with weary eyes and empty stomachs sought refuge at Love and Care Ministries, where a simple meal of fish sticks and crinkle fries awaited them. For some, this meal would be their only sustenance of the day.
Among the visitors that day was a 20-year-old woman who, with just a backpack containing cigarettes and a lighter, found her way to the ministry seeking assistance. She had no extra clothing, no identification, and an air of apprehension surrounding her.
Expressing her need for warmer attire, the young woman was graciously provided with new clothes before enjoying a comforting meal in the cafeteria. This act of kindness seemed to lift a weight off her shoulders, offering a moment of respite from her struggles.
Another poignant encounter involved an elderly woman without a home, inquiring about a spare tent to shield her from the impending rain. Despite the shortage of tents, a stroke of luck led to the discovery of one overlooked tent, providing temporary shelter for the night.
These narratives shed light on a different facet of Abilene, where basic necessities like meals and shelter are not guaranteed for everyone. Love and Care Ministries, with its unwavering commitment to serving the marginalized, stands as a pillar of support for those often overlooked by society.
Founded by Mark Hewitt, Love and Care Ministries has become a family affair, with Mark’s son, Zack Hewitt, and daughter, Magen Pitcock, actively involved in the mission. What began as a personal calling for Mark has evolved into a lifelong dedication to aiding the homeless and underserved in the community.
The ministry’s outreach extends beyond mere sustenance, embodying moments of inexplicable generosity and faith. Mark reminisces about instances where provisions seemed to multiply miraculously, ensuring that no one in need was turned away empty-handed.
Zack’s role in distributing food to families in need reflects the ministry’s holistic approach to combating hunger. Through donations and community support, Love and Care Ministries continues to make a tangible difference in the lives of those struggling to make ends meet.
Moreover, the ministry’s impact transcends mere charity, as exemplified by individuals like John Bargelski, whose life was transformed through the organization’s assistance. From providing meals to offering employment opportunities, Love and Care Ministries embodies the belief that compassion and faith can bring about profound change in the lives of the less fortunate.
In the midst of challenges and uncertainties, Love and Care Ministries stands as a testament to the power of community, kindness, and unwavering faith in the face of adversity.
