A Glimpse into Trey McKenney’s Basketball Journey

Basketball Diaries: A Day in the Life with Trey McKenney Part 1

In FLINT, Michigan (WJRT), Trey McKenney stands out as the top-rated player according to ESPN, a distinction not seen since the days of Miles Bridges.

Becoming one of the nation’s elite players demands dedicated practice.

McKenney expresses, “I feel more prepared after a morning workout. Breaking a sweat, nailing shots—it boosts my confidence for the game ahead.”

An active participant in “The Breakfast Club,” Trey joined during his freshman year at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. Prior to tip-off, he can be found in the gym, honing his skills and mentally preparing for the game.

His training regimen kicks off at 6 a.m.

Coach Covert reflects, “We’ve hosted NFL and NBA players, including Jermaine Gonzales. But Trey’s work ethic is unparalleled.”

Describing Trey as fiercely competitive, his father, John, notes, “He despises being second best. To him, being number two is forgettable.”

Respected NBA figures from Flint have endorsed McKenney.

John elaborates, “From Kelvin Torbert to Mateen, especially Miles, Monte, even Kyle Kuzma—they’ve all embraced him, affirming his talent. They’ve acknowledged his potential to shine.”

Trey reflects on the privilege of interacting with such accomplished individuals, “Most high schoolers don’t have that opportunity. To engage with those who were highly regarded in high school—it’s invaluable to pick their brains.”

Post-workout, Trey strolls five minutes to his dorm at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, commencing classes at 7:30 a.m.

Maintaining a 3.6 GPA, he has received over 30 college offers from prestigious institutions like Michigan State, Michigan, Kansas, UCLA, and USC.

John explains, “Trey needed a different environment. While schools like Carman-Ainsworth, Grand Blanc, Davison are excellent, they didn’t align with Trey’s needs. He craved authenticity and freedom. Opting for Orchard Lake was, in my view, the best parental decision.”

Trey shares his excitement, “Being a pivotal figure at Orchard Lake, someone everyone looks up to—it’s truly exhilarating.”

After classes, Trey works with Coach Todd Covert, who is grooming him for collegiate and professional success, should he reach that level.

Coach Covert emphasizes, “Our focus is on collegiate strategies and readiness because that’s the ultimate goal—ensuring they are equipped for the next stage.”

In a January face-off against U of D Jesuit, McKenney led Orchard Lake St. Mary’s to a 76-68 victory, contributing 28 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists.

This win held special significance for the Eaglets, having avenged their sole defeat of the season at the hands of Jesuit.

McKenney reflects on the joy of victory, “Winning is the ultimate goal. The elation of winning—it’s indescribable.”

Coach Covert lauds McKenney as the finest player he’s coached, drawing parallels to the legendary Chris Webber.

Post-game, it’s back to family and the grind.

Flint’s own rapper, Jon Connor, provided the musical backdrop for this narrative.
