Exciting Activities in Massachusetts for April School Break

With a school vacation spanning eight days from Saturday, April 13, to Sunday, April 21, parents might be on the lookout for ways to keep their children entertained and prevent the all-too-familiar complaint of “I’m bored.”

For families in Massachusetts opting for a staycation this April, there are numerous local attractions to explore and enjoy.

Western Mass.

Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst

Situated at 125 West Bay Road, Amherst, the museum was founded in 2002 by the late Massachusetts-based children’s author Eric Carle. The museum aims to engage everyone interested in the art of picture books through colorful displays and interactive exhibits.

During April vacation week, “The Carle” is hosting a series of events including guest storytellers, art-making activities, and special programs—all complimentary with museum admission. The entry fee is \(8 per visitor aged 1-18 years or 65 and older. Students and teachers are also priced at \)8 each. Adults above 18 years old are charged $15 per person, with free admission available.

Operating hours are as follows:

  • Wednesday through Friday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Please note that the museum will close early on Saturday, April 13, at 4 p.m., and resume regular hours on Sunday, April 14, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Additionally, the museum will be closed on Monday, April 15, for Patriots Day, reopening on Tuesday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fun City Adventure Park, Springfield

Located at 1277 Liberty St., Springfield, Fun City Adventure Park is an indoor trampoline and amusement park offering over 11 attractions including an arcade, bumper balls, wall climbing, zip lining, and obstacle courses.

General rates for admission and jumping range from \(25 for 90 minutes to \)30 for a day pass. For children under 42 inches tall, rates vary from \(18 for 90 minutes to \)22 for a day pass.

Operating hours are as follows:

  • Monday to Thursday: 2:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Friday: 12 p.m. – 11 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. – 11 p.m.
  • Sunday: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Holyoke Heritage State Park, Holyoke

Found at 221 Appleton St., Holyoke Heritage State Park offers visitors a chance to stroll along historic canals that once powered mills. The park features a visitors’ center with exhibits highlighting Holyoke’s industrial past and cultural heritage.

As part of the April vacation programming, children aged 6-15 can participate in watercolor technique workshops. The workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, April 17, with different focuses for age groups 6-9 and 10-15. The programs are free, with all necessary supplies provided. Registration is mandatory by calling 413-534-1723, specifying the attendee’s age. Participants will convene at the Visitor Center, and please note that dogs are not permitted.

Central Mass.

Purgatory Chasm, Sutton

Located at 198 Purgatory Road, Sutton, this state reservation offers visitors the opportunity to explore trails and unique rock formations. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, showcasing granite walls that rise up to 70 feet.

Various programs are scheduled, including educational sessions on native rocks, animal skulls, and a Chasm Hike. These programs are free, though parking fees apply.

APEX Entertainment, Marlborough

Situated at 21 Apex Drive, Marlborough, APEX Entertainment is a diverse entertainment center featuring activities such as bowling, indoor bumper cars, go-karts, mini-golf, laser tag, and more. Specific pricing and height requirements apply for each activity, with hours varying throughout the week.

Southwick’s Zoo, Mendon

Opening its gates on April 13, Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon is home to over 850 animals in natural habitats, offering attractions like the Skyfari Sky Ride, Woodland Express Train, zip line, and petting zoo. Admission fees vary by age group, with the zoo open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ringling Bros. Circus, Worcester

From Friday, April 12, to Sunday, April 14, the Ringling Bros. Circus is set to dazzle audiences in Worcester with daring acts on highwires, trapezes, and more. Ticket prices start at $27 each.

Battleship Cove, Fall River

Located at 5 Water St., Fall River, Battleship Cove is a naval ship museum showcasing authentic aircraft, ships, and war memorials. Tickets can be purchased online or on-site, with varying rates for adults, children, and seniors.

Boston Duck Tours

Boston Duck Tours offer a unique experience to explore historic Boston aboard a WWII-style amphibious landing vehicle. Tours depart from different locations, with ticket prices varying by age group. The tour lasts approximately 80 minutes and includes both land and water sightseeing.
