NAPA, Calif. – Following a snowboarding accident last weekend, a student athlete from North Bay is now dealing with life-altering injuries.
Blake Mendenhall, a 15-year-old freshman at Vintage High School in Napa, is described by his family and coaches as an exceptional and well-loved individual.
Speaking from his hospital bed in Reno, Nev., Blake recounted the accident and expressed his determination to embrace life to the fullest despite the challenges posed by his injuries.
“I hit an edge and tried to maneuver away from a tree, but unfortunately collided with it. That’s when I stopped and realized I couldn’t feel my legs,” Blake shared, detailing the moment he crashed into a tree while snowboarding at a Tahoe ski resort on Sunday afternoon.
Reports indicate that he suffered a spinal cord injury that has impacted his ability to walk.
Despite the severity of his injuries, Blake remains optimistic.
“Even in the face of adversity and pain, I’ve come to understand the importance of resilience and perseverance. Never give up, never surrender,” he affirmed.
Family members disclosed that he underwent extensive neurosurgery and now has spinal rods supporting his injured back.
“His resilience has truly shifted my perspective on this situation. He is my source of strength,” remarked Blake’s mother, Tasha Abri, who has been by his side throughout.
Adam Mendenhall, his father, has called for prayers and a miracle.
His coaches speak highly of Blake’s athletic prowess, noting his achievements across various sports.
“This is Blake right here nailing the extra point,” pointed out Dylan Leach, the head football coach at the school, as he referenced a video showing the teen scoring a field goal. “Despite this tragedy, he will undoubtedly put in the work required to overcome this setback.”
Apart from football, Blake is actively involved in soccer and recently joined the golf team.
He was slated to receive a special accolade at school for his outstanding performance as a student athlete with a commendable work ethic.
“He’s simply remarkable. Whether it’s on the football field, the golf course, or the soccer field, having twenty Blake’s with his positive attitude would be a dream,” expressed his soccer coach, Javier Covarrubias.
Sending a message to his community, Blake expressed, “I miss everyone back in Napa and eagerly anticipate our reunion. Thank you for the unwavering support.”
He is set to undergo rehabilitation at Craig’s Hospital in Colorado, a facility specializing in spinal cord injuries.
It may be several months before he can return home to Napa.
In the interim, his family has established a fund to assist with expenses, including necessary home modifications.
Additionally, a platform has been created to update the community on his recovery journey.
