Torres Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for 2016 Diana Alvarez Murder

The tragic and harrowing story of 9-year-old Diana Alvarez reached its conclusion on Wednesday as Jorge Manuel Guerrero Torres received a life sentence in prison for the kidnapping and murder of the young girl in 2016.

State Attorney Amira Fox stated, “This life sentence, chosen from two possible options, ensures that this perpetrator will remain incarcerated permanently, with no automatic appeals and a reduction in potential post-conviction filings. The sorrowful events and atrocious circumstances surrounding Diana’s passing will no longer torment her family in the courtroom.”

The sentencing followed the exclusion of crucial statements made by the defendant regarding his interactions with the victim and his awareness of the crime, rendering them inadmissible as trial evidence.

Diana went missing from her residence on Unique Circle in the Sheltering Pines mobile home community along U.S. 41 in south Lee County on the early morning of May 29.

Her disappearance triggered a widespread search effort involving numerous agencies that extended across the state and at times reached a national scale.

Search operations in the vicinity of Diana’s home, including the deployment of specialized K9 units from the Peace River Search and Rescue, were conducted in wooded areas near the Sheltering Pines neighborhood based on tips suggesting the possible discovery of her remains.

Acknowledging the commendable efforts of law enforcement, particularly the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, State Attorney Fox remarked, “Their relentless investigation in this challenging case underscored their unwavering commitment to locating a missing child and providing closure to a grieving family.”

Despite maintaining hope for Diana’s safe return in the initial stages of the search, her family received the heartbreaking news in 2020 that her remains had been found in a wooded area in Osceola County.

Guerrero Torres, who had resided in the victim’s home for a period and reportedly had interactions with her, was early on identified as a potential suspect. He had been requested to vacate the trailer shortly before Diana’s disappearance.

The Sheriff’s Office arrested Guerrero Torres in 2017 for the crime, leading to his indictment by the Lee County Grand Jury in 2018, with the State Attorney’s Office announcing its intention to pursue the death penalty.

Emphasizing the significance of the case beyond mere statistics, State Attorney Fox expressed, “The victim is not a mere image; Diana has been the focal point of this case from the outset, with the primary aim being to secure justice. With the defendant now sentenced to spend the remainder of his life behind bars, I hope Diana can finally find peace. He is a predator who targeted an innocent young girl who deserved safety within her own home.”
