Transformative Egg Sandwich Hidden in a North Loop Store

Surprisingly, the convenience store that City Pages employees once frequented for snacks and cigarettes has transformed into a destination for one of the finest breakfast sandwiches in town. Life can be quite unpredictable!

At 5th Avenue Market, amidst the array of beef jerky, chewing gum, and Red Bull to fuel your day, there is now a delightful surprise—a counter offering unique egg sandwiches that stand out in the Twin Cities culinary scene.

Introduced last summer by Adam Bresina, formerly an executive sous chef at The Hewing Hotel and executive chef at the Minneapolis Club, Egg On A Roll presents sandwiches with a gourmet touch and creative ingredients that reflect Bresina’s culinary expertise. These delectable sandwiches are priced between \(6.99 and \)8.99.

Before delving into the intriguing toppings, let’s first discuss the star of the show—the egg and roll. The egg, served as a lofty, one-inch-tall disc of fluffy goodness, defies gravity with its soft, almost decadent texture that borders on cheesiness, reminiscent of southern grits. Bresina has aptly described it as a “,” a creation that piques curiosity and demands further investigation.

Complementing the remarkable egg is the brioche bun, a crucial element that can make or break an egg sandwich. This brioche bun stands out for its pillowy softness, subtle sweetness, and perfectly toasted exterior, providing a delightful textural contrast. Its buttery and tender qualities make it the ideal vessel for the flavorful fillings.

The menu at Egg On A Roll presents a dilemma with its enticing selection of sandwiches. From The Tuscany with spinach, roasted tomato, and pesto aioli to The Cryin Eggy featuring spicy egg and bacon, each option is a tempting choice. During our visit, we opted for Breakfast In Bombay and The Forager, intrigued by their unique combinations and flavors.

Packed with chorizo, chili crisp, banana peppers, and garam masala spread, Breakfast in Bombay ($8.99) delivers a spicy kick alongside refreshing sprouts and a hint of red onion. Despite its bold flavors, this sandwich maintains a delicate balance that makes it suitable for any time of day.

On the other hand, The Forager ($7.99) offers a fresh and vegetal experience with tangy chevré, marinated mushrooms, garlic aioli, and peppery arugula. This sandwich showcases a harmonious blend of flavors that elevate the humble egg to new heights, blurring the lines between a traditional egg sandwich and a gourmet culinary creation.

Egg On A Roll truly excels in highlighting the versatility of eggs, offering exceptional value with sandwiches that are both satisfying and difficult to resist. Prepare to embark on a flavorful journey that will leave you reaching for napkins to handle the delightful messiness of these generously topped creations.
