Embracing Texas 4-H: A Family Tradition of Growth and Learning
Kyler Wendt, hailing from Brazos County, followed in the footsteps of his family by joining Texas 4-H, a program deeply rooted in his household. His parents and older sister were also active participants, which inspired him to carry on the tradition. Wendt’s journey began with small livestock projects, such as a pen of rabbits and a goat in third grade, and eventually progressed to larger responsibilities, including exhibiting heifers and sheep at major livestock shows across the state.
Wendt’s involvement in Texas 4-H taught him not only about agriculture but also the importance of dedication and responsibility. By his freshman year of high school, he realized the long-term value the program could offer him and decided to fully commit to exploring the world of agriculture. This experience became a turning point, helping him see the significant benefits that would impact his future.
Seizing Leadership and Educational Opportunities in Texas 4-H
As Wendt delved deeper into the program, he took on numerous leadership roles to expand his skills and contribute to the community. “Since 2018, I’ve held various leadership positions that have taught me so much,” Wendt shared. One of his most notable experiences was serving as an ambassador for the Texas Youth Livestock Association (TYLA), where he gained valuable insights into the agricultural industry and enhanced his ability to serve others. Despite the challenges, Wendt believed that stepping into leadership roles was key to his personal growth.
Wendt’s contributions extended beyond his ambassador role; he remained actively involved in the Southwood 4-H officer team and the Brazos County 4-H Council. These experiences not only helped him build connections within his local chapters but also opened doors for future endeavors, including scholarships and further education in agriculture.
A Bright Future Ahead: Texas 4-H Paves the Way
Thanks to his dedication and hard work, Wendt secured several scholarships that will support his college education, where he plans to pursue animal science at Texas A&M. His involvement in Texas 4-H events on campus has already allowed him to network with faculty and feel a sense of belonging in his new academic environment. “Texas 4-H has truly made Texas A&M feel like home,” Wendt expressed, excited for the next chapter of his journey.
Reflecting on his time with Texas 4-H, Wendt acknowledges that the program equipped him with essential life skills, meaningful friendships, and invaluable memories. He advises new members to step out of their comfort zones, participate in a variety of events, and make the most of the opportunities available. “Success and friendships don’t come easily, but Texas 4-H provides all the tools you need to achieve both,” he concluded.
