Sergeant Casey Sheppard’s prompt decision-making and effective CPR abilities played a crucial role in saving a man’s life.
In Temple, Texas, Sergeant Casey Sheppard was commended on Thursday for his heroic actions in January 2024, which contributed to saving a man’s life.
On New Year’s Day, while driving home, Sheppard heard a cardiac emergency call in the 700 block of Olde Oaks Dr. The call, initially dispatched by the [Emergency Medical Services], was also relayed to the Temple Police Department due to its urgency and proximity.
Upon arrival, Sheppard immediately initiated CPR on 79-year-old Ron Scott, who had ceased breathing.
Kathy Scott, Ron’s wife, recalled, “All of a sudden, I heard him make a strange noise and then another one, and I got him to lie down, but he was unresponsive.” She had been administering CPR to her husband until Sheppard arrived at the scene. With Sheppard taking over, Ron’s breathing was successfully restored.
Subsequently, the [Emergency Medical Services] arrived to provide further medical assistance, stabilizing Ron for transportation to medical facilities.
Sheppard’s swift response and training made a significant difference in Ron’s life that day. Finally, on Thursday, Ron had the opportunity to meet his rescuer.
During the City Council meeting, Sheppard expressed, “He’s the first individual that I’ve ever performed CPR on that I’ve had the chance to meet afterward. I’m so glad to meet you. Absolutely. But he’s truly the success story here because he overcame something that, from what I hear, he shouldn’t have.”
Two months post-incident, Ron reported positive progress as he continued rehabilitation three days a week. Despite sustaining a broken sternum and five ribs, Ron remained optimistic about his recovery.
Reflecting on the near-tragic event, Ron shared his emotional journey and expressed his anticipation in meeting the hero who saved his life.
Sheppard, Ron, and his family stand as advocates for the significance of CPR training. Ron emphasized, “It’s crucial that everyone learns CPR. Start now. I don’t care how old or young you are. Learn CPR.”
Sheppard echoed the sentiment, stating, “The impact that can have on an individual or a family is immeasurable.”
The recognition and reunion on Thursday were poignant moments for both Sheppard and Ron, underscoring the emotional impact of such encounters.
In gratitude, Ron extended his appreciation not only to Sheppard but to all first responders, acknowledging their dedication and service.
