Selfless South Florida Woman Commits 4 Decades to YMCA, Serving as Employee and Volunteer

A South Florida resident has devoted numerous years to assisting others, displaying boundless dedication to her cause. Karen Hensel presents her story in this evening’s 7 Spotlight segment.

Engaged in a wide range of activities from leading Zumba sessions in the morning to providing meals for families in the afternoon, Martha Rodriguez is driven by a relentless commitment to make a positive impact.

Martha Rodriguez, a volunteer at the YMCA, emphasizes the significance of contributing meaningfully to her community.

Her volunteer work at the Allapattah YMCA, particularly at La Bodega, a free food pantry, where she is affectionately known as Ms. Martika, is a testament to her dedication.

Martha not only distributes food but also educates recipients on the nutritional value of the produce, ensuring they understand how to make healthy choices.

With a career spanning several decades, Martha’s journey began at the YMCA University in Mexico City during the 1980s.

Having been employed at nine YMCAs in Mexico and South Florida, Martha has fulfilled various roles such as preschool teacher, swim instructor, and camp advisor.

Throughout her tenure, Martha has been recognized with accolades, including the “Employee of the Year” award in 1995 from the YMCA of Greater Miami.

Her contributions extended to assisting Cuban immigrants at the Y in Little Havana, providing them with essential support and a sense of family in a new country.

Despite retiring during the COVID-19 pandemic, Martha’s passion for service led her back to the YMCA as a volunteer, highlighting the integral role it plays in her life.

Having dedicated 40 years to the YMCA, Martha’s unwavering commitment to helping those in need has left a lasting impact, earning her the admiration of the staff at Allapattah YMCA.

Described as a cherished member of the YMCA family, Martha’s presence exudes a genuine desire to assist others, embodying the spirit of selflessness and compassion.

Martha’s ultimate goal is to leave a legacy of hope and transformation, emphasizing the importance of extending a helping hand to those in need, regardless of their background.
