City Opera Vancouver, under the guidance of artistic director Gordon Gerrard, is set to showcase the opera at the conclusion of February, featuring mezzo-soprano Marion Newman, a prominent figure of the Kwagiulth and Stó:lō First Nations, in the leading role.
Opera narratives often revolve around captivating heroines, with one such remarkable figure being the writer and explorer Isabelle Eberhardt, whose life was characterized by a spirited pace and a premature demise.
Isabelle Eberhardt, born in Geneva in 1877 to Russian-Armenian parents, embarked on a unique path, initially publishing in a French journal using a male pseudonym. Her journey led her to Algeria, where she adopted male attire, embraced Islam, particularly a sect of Sufism dedicated to alleviating poverty.
A versatile adventurer, Eberhardt served as a war correspondent and authored the novel Vagabond, which was published posthumously in 1922. In her writings, she expressed her yearning for the freedom she believed eluded her in Europe, extolling the virtues of vagrancy and the liberation found in a nomadic existence.
Expressing staunch opposition to France’s colonial presence in North Africa, Eberhardt survived an assassination attempt in 1901 but tragically succumbed to a flash flood three years later. Her compelling life story inspired the creation of the 2012 chamber opera Songs from the Uproar: The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt, featuring music by American composer Missy Mazzoli and a libretto co-written with Canadian Royce Vavrek.
Mezzo-soprano Marion Newman, a member of the Kwagiulth and Stó:lō First Nations, will take on the lead role in the upcoming presentation of the opera by City Opera Vancouver at the end of February. Apart from her operatic pursuits, Newman, known for her role as the host of CBC Radio’s Saturday Afternoon at the Opera, recently shared insights on her artistic preparation, musings on inspiration, and reflections on her role as a representative of the opera world.
