AVON – The basketball crowd at home is lively, with packed bleachers on the Oriole’s right. However, the noise doesn’t penetrate the costume of the furry, black bird with enormous yellow flat feet stationed behind the basket. The cheers come across as more of a muted hum.
The Oriole struggles to hear in his right ear, almost deaf to the surrounding noise. To his left, the cheerleaders energetically chant “defense” and urge the team to steal the ball, but the Oriole, blind in his left eye, can’t quite make out their movements when he glances in their direction.
For the past four years, Owen Carr has embodied Avon High’s oriole mascot, known as Big O, captivating fans at the school located 14 miles west of Indianapolis. Whether electrifying the crowd on crisp fall Friday nights or bringing warmth to the gym on chilly winter evenings, Big O has left a lasting impression.
Performing somersaults at center court, interacting with fans, and exuding confidence, Big O has become a beloved figure, especially among elementary kids who cherish the moments they spend with him.
Despite the challenges he faces, Owen continues to pour his heart and soul into his role as the mascot, earning admiration and acceptance from his peers. His dedication and unwavering spirit shine through, making him a central figure in the school community.
Beyond his mascot duties, Owen is a compassionate individual, always looking for ways to brighten the lives of those around him. From running his dog-sitting business, Pupcation, to taking on roles in school productions, Owen’s enthusiasm and kindness are truly remarkable.
Despite his numerous medical conditions, including autism, cerebral palsy, and sensory issues, Owen’s resilience and determination define his journey. His parents, Kelly and Kevin, have stood by him through countless surgeries and challenges, praying not just for his survival but for a life filled with purpose and joy.
Owen’s transformation into Big O symbolizes his courage and indomitable spirit, transcending barriers and inspiring others with his infectious positivity. His impact on the school community goes beyond the confines of a mascot costume, embodying the essence of perseverance and genuine compassion.
As Owen prepares to graduate from high school and pass on the mantle of Big O, his legacy as a spirited and beloved mascot will endure. His parents, filled with hope for his future, envision a path paved with opportunities for companionship and fulfillment, rooted in the unwavering belief that Owen is perfect just the way he is.
In Owen’s words, “You’re perfect in God’s image… You’re perfect either way.” And whether he’s donning a costume or standing tall as himself, Owen’s essence remains a beacon of light and inspiration to all who have had the privilege of knowing him.
