Illuminating a Path: Survivors and Caregivers Leading the Charge at Relay for Life

Admission to the Relay for Life event on Saturday is complimentary, and attendees can enjoy food and activities suitable for all ages in exchange for a donation. The event, organized by Southwest Louisiana volunteers in support of the American Cancer Society, aims to celebrate survivors, commemorate those who have passed, and recognize the dedication of caregivers.

Scheduled to take place from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at the Lake Charles Event Center Amphitheatre, this festival-style gathering will feature various fundraising initiatives. Carrie LaFargue, the senior development manager at the American Cancer Society, highlighted the event’s mission to raise funds that will benefit the local community in Southwest Louisiana and contribute to the ongoing fight against cancer.

In its 30th year, the Relay for Life event continues to evolve, with this year’s edition introducing a 5K Walk/Run alongside the traditional 1K Walk/Run. Attendees are encouraged to participate in these activities and contribute to the cause. Additionally, the event will offer food, entertainment, and opportunities for donations, with the option for attendees to register for the runs on the event day for a fee of $30.

The event will feature symbolic elements such as the luminaria experience and a fireworks display, signifying hope and resilience in the face of cancer. The theme for this year’s Relay for Life, “Lighting a way for a cause,” underscores the importance of unity and support in the fight against cancer.

Major sponsor Northrup Grunman will be supporting the event, which will include various activities throughout the evening:

  • Survivor Celebration Victory Lap at 5:15 p.m., inviting all cancer survivors to participate in the opening lap.
  • 5K & 1K Gleux Run starting at 5:30 p.m., with prizes awarded to the top three finishers in both men’s and women’s divisions.
  • Campsite and Entertainment at 6:15 p.m., offering food stalls, music, and dancing for attendees.
  • Luminaria ceremony and fireworks display, honoring and remembering those affected by cancer through a touching tribute.

The funds raised during the event will be utilized to support cancer patients and caregivers in the region, including lodging and transportation assistance to and from treatment centers. The American Cancer Society grants are currently aiding patients undergoing treatment at Lake Charles Memorial Health System and Christus Ochsner Health of Southwest Louisiana.
