Heroic Off-Duty Firefighter Saves Man’s Life Mid-Flight

James Bertolino and his family embarked on their annual journey to Mexico, filled with thoughts of relaxation and enjoyment.

“We were simply looking forward to the warm weather and creating wonderful memories,” shared Bertolino, a dedicated volunteer firefighter at the Troy Fire Department. Little did they know that their trip would take a serious turn.

During their January 2023 flight, Bertolino found himself in a critical situation where his quick thinking and training played a pivotal role in saving a fellow passenger’s life. A flight attendant, noticing his fire department golf outing shirt, sought his assistance.

Approximately 10 to 15 minutes before landing, Bertolino was alerted to a medical emergency involving a passenger at the rear of the aircraft.

Acting promptly, Bertolino discovered an elderly male passenger in distress—barely conscious, perspiring, and complaining of chest discomfort. Drawing upon his expertise, he assessed the situation, noting the passenger’s weak pulse. Utilizing the resources available, he provided aid and was soon aided by a nurse among the passengers. As the situation intensified, James sprang into action, retrieving and utilizing the automated external defibrillator (AED) effectively.

Coordinating with a physician assistant onboard, Bertolino facilitated the administration of aspirin and nitroglycerin, leading to the passenger’s gradual improvement.

Following an emergency landing, medical personnel arrived, and Bertolino assisted in evacuating the passenger from the plane and transferring him to an awaiting ambulance.

While Bertolino remains unaware of the passenger’s ultimate outcome, he ensured that the individual was stabilized and conscious upon disembarking.

Reflecting on the incident, Bertolino emphasized the importance of his training and emergency response involvement as a volunteer firefighter.

“I strive to give back to the community,” he expressed.

With nearly eight years of service as a Troy firefighter, Bertolino comes from a family deeply rooted in volunteer firefighting across the Detroit area. His early exposure to fire trucks and the camaraderie among firefighters have fueled his dedication to the role.

Despite the demands of his job in computer repair, Bertolino’s commitment to the volunteer force is unwavering. His wife, MaryFrances, and their 4-year-old daughter, Sophia, stand by him, understanding the significance of his service, even during sudden station calls.

In recognition of his heroic actions, Bertolino was honored with the Lifesaving Award by the fire department, alongside other deserving personnel at the annual ceremony.
