After over a decade of primarily working with rock bands such as Wild Flag and Ex Hex, singer-songwriter-guitarist Mary Timony is set to release her first solo album in 15 years titled “Untame the Tiger” this Friday. Timony explained that the material she was creating seemed better suited for a solo project rather than a group endeavor, as it didn’t quite fit the style of her previous band, Ex Hex.
The upcoming album, “Untame the Tiger,” reflects Timony’s three-decade-long career, including her time with ‘90s bands Autoclave and Helium, as well as her solo projects like “Mountains” and “The Golden Dove.” The journey towards creating this new record was marked by personal challenges, especially when Timony took on the role of caring for her ailing parents until their passing, alongside dealing with the end of a long-term relationship during the upheaval of the pandemic.
In the making of “Untame the Tiger,” co-produced by Timony, Joe Wong, and Dennis Kane, she ensured that the album aligned with her vision. Collaborating with esteemed musicians like Dave Mattacks from Fairport Convention added a unique touch to the record. Drawing from influences like post-punk, British folk, and psychedelia, the album showcases Timony’s distinctive guitar work.
The lead single “Dominoes” sets a lively tone, although its lyrics delve into the complexities of falling for the wrong person. The title track, “Untame the Tiger,” transitions from a cinematic piece to a pop-infused number, exploring the allure of intriguing yet incompatible individuals. Tracks like “No Thirds” and “Not the Only One” delve into themes of loss, resilience, and optimism, with intricate musical arrangements that highlight Timony’s creative breadth.
As Timony gears up for a tour in support of the new album, she looks forward to performing alongside musicians who contributed to the record. Her musical journey, rooted in classic rock and influenced by genres like psychedelic and prog rock, reflects her eclectic tastes and deep appreciation for music history. Widely recognized as a guitar virtuoso, Timony’s style resonates with mystical folk elements, inspired by her early experiences with the viola.
Reflecting on her diverse musical ventures, including Wild Flag and Ex Hex, Timony appreciates the dynamics of both solo artistry and band collaborations. While acknowledging the challenges and rewards of each approach, she embraces the fluidity of her creative path, allowing her music to evolve organically.
“Untame the Tiger” marks a significant chapter in Mary Timony’s musical legacy, blending her rich influences and personal experiences into a compelling narrative. Set for release via Merge Records, the album promises a captivating exploration of Timony’s artistry and musical evolution.
