The documentation of the final year of her mother’s life by Marin photographer Lisa Newmark was captured through her lens at San Rafael’s Drake Terrace in 2022. Unintentionally, Newmark beautifully portrayed her mother Laurel’s journey, depicting the evolving relationship with her caregivers, moments of joy, and the increasing need for care until her passing in January 2023 at the age of 92.
Newmark’s solo exhibit, titled “As life narrows…,” will feature 60 poignant images accompanied by written reflections on the experience. The exhibit will be held at Garvey|Simon in San Anselmo, located at 538 San Anselmo Ave, with opening hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The opening reception is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
Among the captivating shots is a lively photo session where Laurel, adorned in a fedora, exudes her “inner child and inner diva,” along with intimate moments like a close-up of her hands and shower time assisted by a caregiver. Newmark’s lens also captured a playful side of her mother, flipping off the camera.
Through her lens, Newmark aimed to shed light on the often overlooked lives of individuals like her mother, emphasizing that even in the twilight of life, their presence and significance remain. She shares that the essence of life persists until the very end, challenging the common perception of invisibility that older individuals often face.
Initially reigniting her passion for photography in 2019, Newmark’s creative journey led her to rediscover the art form’s meditative qualities. Exploring the world through her camera became a form of self-reflection and a means to reconnect with her inner creativity.
The project, which unintentionally evolved into a poignant portrayal of her mother’s final days, initially focused on capturing the essence of daily life amidst diminishing independence. The project later expanded to encompass the profound relationships between Laurel and her caregivers, revealing moments of joy, laughter, and the enduring spirit within the confines of declining health.
Newmark’s intimate documentation also highlighted the profound bond between her mother and her primary caregiver, Elvira, whose acts of kindness and love towards Laurel were akin to an art form in themselves. The evolving relationship between Laurel and Elvira unfolded beautifully, underscoring the importance of caregivers in the lives of the elderly.
Reflecting on her unique dynamic with her mother, Newmark acknowledges the transformative effect of being behind the camera. The photographic process created a space for them to connect on a different level, transcending the usual emotional barriers and allowing for a deeper, more present interaction.
As the exhibit unfolds, Newmark hopes to resonate with those who have experienced loss or are currently caring for a loved one. She aims to spark conversations and reflections on the multifaceted nature of aging, portraying her mother as a vibrant, multi-dimensional individual even in her later years.
In honoring her mother’s colorful spirit and theatrical background, Newmark believes that Laurel would have cherished being the focal point of the exhibit. She envisions her mother smiling down with pride and joy, embracing the opportunity to be celebrated and remembered through the lens of her daughter’s artistry.
