Grateful Looman Family Acknowledges Support Following Tragic Loss

Ryan Looman realized the extent of his support system during the toughest period of his life. Living in Concord Township, he experienced a tragic accident on Route 608 in Hambden Township that claimed the life of his 9-year-old son, Koby.

The overwhelming and awe-inspiring support that followed, including benefits, fundraisers, and heartfelt gestures of comfort such as phone calls and embraces, left Looman deeply moved. One significant event that provided support to the Looman family was a large youth basketball tournament held at Berkshire High School on Feb. 19, a tournament that both Koby and his older brother Eli would have participated in.

“This means so much,” expressed Looman gratefully. “We are very appreciative of the support we’ve received and are incredibly thankful for Big Leaf as an organization for thinking of us. We know our network of support is incredible.”

The Big Leaf basketball program, which has been organizing elementary school showcases for eight years, dedicated this year’s President’s Day Showcase entirely to supporting the Looman family. Matt Janssen, the organizer, established this initiative nine years ago following his brother Ken’s passing from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, this particular event held special significance due to the personal connection with the Loomans, who are actively involved in the Big Leaf program.

Janssen aimed to raise between \(5,000 and \)10,000 for the Looman family to aid in their physical, mental, and emotional recovery from the recent car accident. The family, already dealing with Ed Looman’s surgery to remove a brain tumor shortly before the accident, has faced immense challenges.

Despite the physical injuries sustained by the family members, including Ryan’s broken nose and orbital bones, Liz’s broken leg, and the children’s various injuries, the emotional healing remains the primary focus. The outpouring of support from loved ones and the community has been a source of comfort during this trying time.

The impact of the President’s Day Showcase extended beyond fundraising, as it brought together teammates, friends, and community members to rally behind the Looman family. Janssen hopes that the spirit of unity and generosity displayed at the event will leave a lasting impression on the young participants, inspiring them to continue supporting others in need in the future.

The event, which saw over 175 elementary school basketball players participate, exemplified the power of community support and solidarity, with all proceeds directed towards assisting the Looman family in their journey towards healing and recovery.
