Celebrating W. Dwight Raiford: A Legacy of Leadership and Commitment
W. Dwight Raiford, who passed at 75, will be remembered for his enduring commitment to Little League International. He was an integral member of the Board of Directors for nearly 25 years, serving as Chairman for part of that tenure. Living in Atlanta, Georgia, Raiford embarked on his Little League journey in 1989, co-founding the Harlem Little League with his wife, Iris, which began his lifelong dedication to nurturing young athletes and bolstering community support.
Advancing Youth Sports and Community Engagement
During the 1990s, Raiford played a crucial role in the inception of the Little League Urban Initiative. This program partnered with leagues nationwide to increase baseball accessibility for children in underserved communities. His leadership was vital in 2002 when the Harlem team earned its debut in the Little League Baseball® World Series, marking a significant expansion of opportunities in the sport. Stephen D. Leadership in Education and Finance
Raiford’s educational and professional achievements also left a significant mark. As one of the pioneering Black students at Yale University, he later acquired an MBA from Harvard Business School. His vast experience in financial services enriched his contributions to Little League, particularly in financial strategy and operations, leading to critical developments like the expansion of the Little League World Series and the establishment of new facilities, which broadened the organization’s reach and capabilities.
A Lasting Influence and Ongoing Legacy
Raiford’s commitment extended beyond his professional endeavors to significant community service, including his role as a Trustee at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Survived by his wife, Iris, their children, and grandchildren, Raiford’s legacy of leadership and service continues to resonate. Reflecting on his impactful journey in his final Board address in 2018, he shared how deeply Little League shaped his life, highlighting the lasting personal and community benefits of his involvement.
