Jeanette Willis Honored as the 2024 Living Angel at the 38th Life Savers Ball

The John A. Spitzer Conference Center, located at 1005 Abbe Rd N in Elyria, was the venue for the 38th annual Life Savers Ball organized by the American Cancer Society. This event, which has amassed over $3.8 million to support individuals fighting cancer, was proudly sponsored by Cleveland Clinic.

Central to the evening’s program is the bestowal of the prestigious Dr. Alex and Maria Zolli Living Angel Award. This accolade is conferred upon an individual deeply engaged in the realm of cancer either through direct patient interaction or personal encounters with the disease.

In a moving address, Dr. Alex Zolli emphasized the resilience and fortitude exhibited by these “angels” in the face of cancer’s challenges. Their unwavering love, hope, faith, courage, and spirit stand as testaments to the indomitable human will.

The recipient of the 2024 Living Angel Award, Jeanette Willis, hailing from Lorain, has left an indelible mark on the community through her altruistic endeavors. Her commitment to aiding others, evident since her teenage years, persists through her establishment of the non-profit organization, Health Awareness Network Connection.

Through this initiative, Willis strives to enlighten the community on healthy living practices, advocating for wellness through various events that spotlight mental health, cancer awareness, domestic violence prevention, and stroke education. Despite the limited financial resources at her disposal, Willis selflessly contributes personal funds to bridge the gaps in sponsorship.

Noteworthy among Willis’ contributions is the distribution of specially crafted medicine vials to chemotherapy patients, each containing a month’s worth of inspiring bible verses and colored pink in solidarity with breast cancer awareness. Additionally, her role as a caregiver to her mother during her battle with kidney cancer and later to her husband in his fight against lung cancer exemplifies her unwavering dedication and compassion.

Reflecting on these challenging yet transformative experiences, Willis views them as both poignant and enriching, cherishing the privilege of caring for her loved ones during their most vulnerable moments.

Despite her longstanding involvement in the Life Savers Ball’s logistical arrangements and decorations for nearly two decades, Willis never anticipated being honored on stage. The recognition bestowed upon her holds profound significance, symbolizing a fulfillment of her late mother’s and husband’s wishes.

In her own words, Willis expressed profound gratitude for the award, acknowledging the supportive presence of her departed loved ones, who she believes are joyously witnessing her well-deserved moment of acclaim.
