Valter Longo has dedicated nearly two decades to studying the factors contributing to longevity, primarily in Italy, a region known for its high incidence of centenarians, such as Sardinia. Starting his focused research in 1989, Longo now leads the Longevity and Cancer Lab at Milan’s IFOM Institute of Molecular Oncology and also directs the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California’s Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. His work in these idyllic settings provides unique insights into the lifestyles of some of the world’s oldest populations.

The Longevity Diet: A Blueprint for Life Extension

Central to Longo’s findings is the “longevity diet,” which promotes a predominantly plant-based intake, favoring vegetables, legumes, tree nuts, and whole grains while recommending moderate fish consumption. He advises against regular consumption of red and white meats, suggesting minimal dairy and egg intake and proposing a diet free from what he identifies as the five problematic Ps: potatoes, pasta, pizza, protein (excessive), and pane (bread). These, according to Longo, should be limited due to their quick conversion into sugars, similar to table sugar.

Fasting and Its Role in Promoting Health and Longevity

Longo underscores the importance of integrating safe fasting into daily routines, advocating for a 12-hour daily fasting window, such as eating only from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Additionally, he supports the periodic use of a fasting-mimicking diet for five days, which is high in unsaturated fats but low in calories, proteins, and carbohydrates. Research led by Longo and published in Nature Communications shows that this approach in mice led to reduced signs of aging and a lower incidence of age-related diseases, suggesting potential benefits for humans in maintaining vitality and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. These practices, Longo proposes, are crucial for enhancing longevity and maintaining youthfulness and functionality well into old age.
