Embark on a journey back to the year 815 and partake in a captivating living history event at the Alabama Medieval Fantasy Festival (AMFF). This local festival offers a one-of-a-kind experience that transports visitors to the mystical kingdom of Dragon Croft. Nestled amidst forests, rolling hills, and meadows on over 30 acres located just off Interstate Highway 65 in Greenville, the festival has been a staple since 2016, promising an unforgettable voyage through fantasy and history.

“Our event is set in the 800s, encompassing a wide range of historical periods from Vikings to King Arthur, Robin Hood to Queen Elizabeth, spanning approximately 700 – 1600 AD,” explains festival organizer Nancy Ardoin. “Entertainment, education, and grandeur take center stage as history comes alive through hundreds of costumed characters reenacting a 9th Century European Marketplace.”

Anticipate an Array of Experiences

The faire, designed as a medieval marketplace, will be hosted at 7746 Fort Dale Road in Greenville on Mar. 2 – 3, offering a full day of festivities from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission prices are \(20 for adults, \)15 for military and first responders, $10 for children aged 5-13, and free for children under 5. The event will be held rain or shine; however, it is advisable to carry cash as several vendors only accept cash payments.

Visitors are encouraged to attire themselves in suitable and family-friendly garb (costumes) and engage in a plethora of activities. From jousting and sword fighting to apothecary demonstrations and fire table cooking, there is something for everyone. Attendees can partake in dancing at the queen’s garden, delve into Viking camp life, or engage in a Q&A session on pirate lore.

For the competitive souls, there’s the “rat puck” game featuring Lord High Admiral Frederick the Black, and an adult Beard and Mustache competition, complemented by a child-friendly Whiskerina competition.

A Culinary Delight

Hungry adventurers can indulge in a variety of culinary delights from vendors such as the historic Ram and Poni, offering a menu dating back to the 1800s and earlier, and the Twisted Unicorn serving more conventional fare. Additionally, Greenville’s Bates House of Turkey and Fairhope’s Copper Kettle tea bar will be present, serving a selection of teas from around the globe.

Encounter Vibrant Characters

The festival showcases a diverse cast of characters, including Dame Seraphina Celeste Jewel Marquess, the High Minister of the Queen’s College and a skilled swordfighter.

“I will be demonstrating fiber arts, focusing on embroidery pieces,” shared the Marquess. “Our encampment will feature a blacksmith, an apothecary, and a lady specializing in fire table cooking.”

Gabe McLain, the master of the Minstrel’s Guild, discovered his passion for music at an Irish music festival during his childhood and now shares his musical talents at the faire.

“I relish the opportunity to perform the music I love,” McLain expressed. “It’s a chance to engage in something I enjoy and introduce that music to others.”
