Netflix Comeback: ‘Girls5Eva’ Cast and Showrunner Pay Homage to Pop Icons

The narrative revolves around four women who were part of a briefly popular girl group and have reunited after two decades for a second shot at success. The series humorously satirizes the eccentricities of the pop culture landscapes of both the ‘90s and the present day, emphasizing that the comedic elements are infused with affection.

“The show has always been a form of therapeutic solace for us,” a lead actress shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “It provides solace.”

This comedy, produced by Tina Fey, is penned and conceptualized by Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and features Goldsberry, , and .

According to Goldsberry and her co-stars, a significant aspect of this healing process stems from their admiration for Scardino’s original material.

“When we portray characters that may resemble individuals from the past, it is done with genuine love and respect,” Philipps expressed to The Hollywood Reporter. “Every aspect is infused with love and acknowledges the challenges faced by young women in this industry, and all industries, who constantly encounter numerous obstacles.”

Philipps highlighted the resilience displayed by women from the era of Britney Spears: “Despite the adversities, they thrived, they excelled, they persevered with a smile despite the burdens imposed on them,” she remarked. “They have endured, and the women of Girls5Eva embody that spirit.”

Scardino described the series as a fusion of her personal passions. “The characters are influenced by various aspects of our own identities and those of the writers,” she shared with THR.

“All these influences blend together to shape the characters,” she elaborated, noting that they are “inspired by the experiences of young individuals during the Y2K era, particularly in the realm of pop music that saw the emergence of numerous girl and boy bands.”

Following two seasons and a cancellation on Peacock, Girls5Eva avoided being axed with the 2022 announcement of its return. The six-episode season, in addition to the initial two seasons, debuted on the streaming platform on Thursday.

“We are always immensely grateful,” Goldsberry expressed. “Being part of this show is always a surreal experience.”

The cast and crew are optimistic that the broader audience reach of Netflix, coupled with the binge-worthiness of all three seasons, will attract new viewers to the Girls5Eva universe.

“We didn’t feel the need to extensively recap the storylines of season three, as viewers will likely binge-watch it,” Scardino mentioned. “I hope that existing fans may delve into the third season and then revisit the earlier ones, while new viewers can start from the beginning and seamlessly journey through to the conclusion.”

“This series still has untapped potential,” Bareilles remarked on the show’s revival. “We needed to secure a platform for its continuation.”

The first two seasons and the complete third season of Girls5Eva premiered on Netflix on March 14th.
