Fort Myers’ Quality Life Center receives $2M donation amidst decades of empowering youth

For the past 30 decades, Quality Life Center has served the Fort Myers Community. In the early 90’s, Abdul’Haq Muhammed started Quality Life Center partnering with community leaders to create a martial arts program. The program was centered around martial arts to instill character development, leadership training and allow young people to gain control and connection with their minds. That eventually expanded to create an after-school program, including performing arts and visual arts. Now, the Quality Life Center has served as a hub for the Fort Myers community. “We’re that place for our neighborhood and our community that really stands for not only the activities, but also we’re really interested in the humanity of the individual,” said Abdul Muhammad II, who is the chief growth officer and the son of founder Abdul’Haq Muhammed. Quality Life Center strives to create a brighter future for young people and underserved communities through arts, academic enrichment, leadership development and cultural awareness. Philanthropist Mackenzie Scott just donated $2 million to Quality Life Center as part of her Yield Giving fund. It’s a pledge to give half of over $35 billion of her wealth to nonprofits and charities.According to the Yield Giving website, Scott has given over $17.3 billion to over 2,300 non-profits. The Quality Life Center along Martin Luther King Boulevard is now a part of the list shining bright after being selected in an open call application with thousands of other non-profits.Abdul Muhammad II told NBC2 they are beyond grateful for the donation, but say there’s also another aspect to appreciate.”What this means for us to be recognized at a national level by someone like Mackenzie Scott and her philanthropic vision to empower us and say, ‘You guys earned it, you’ve been doing the work and we’re just gonna help you do more,'” Abdul Muhammad II said.All 29 full-time staff members provide extra care and put in overtime to help families and young people reach their highest human potential.But not only do people donate money, but they also donate their time through volunteering.”We’re really committed to every child that walks through the door, having them feel a certain way, making sure that they feel safe, we create an environment where they’re focused and it’s very intentional,” Abdul Muhammad II said.There’s a lot available at Quality Life Center, they have programs for children, teens and even adults.
