From War-Torn Ukraine to the Peaceful Suburbs of Florida
Nearly two years ago, the Kurbanova family left the conflict-ridden landscapes of Ukraine for the safety and serenity of Florida’s suburbs. This drastic change brought its own set of challenges as they navigated the complexities of resettling in a new country. The journey, filled with unexpected turns, has been a transformative experience for the entire family.
Finding Refuge and Friendship in a New Land
The Kurbanovas arrived in Florida in July 2022, far from the dangers of their homeland, and found refuge with Kelli and Lee Stuart, a family who opened their home and hearts to them. Their transition was anything but easy—they arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs and faced significant language barriers. Despite these hurdles, they have worked tirelessly to rebuild their lives from the ground up, supported by the Stuarts’ unwavering kindness.
A Journey of Resilience and Mutual Support
Kelli, who had previously studied in Ukraine and developed a deep connection to the country, felt compelled to help when the conflict escalated. Although she initially considered returning to Ukraine to assist, her responsibilities as a mother of four kept her in the U.S., where she eventually connected with the Kurbanovas. The bond between the two families has grown strong, with both sides embracing the challenges of their new life together, supporting each other through difficult times, including Kelli’s battle with breast cancer, during which the Kurbanovas provided invaluable support.
