WABASHA, Minnesota — Matthew Ruge, a cherished member of the Wabasha community, was known for his acts of kindness and generosity, whether it was welcoming a new friend for a sleepover or assisting someone in need, such as towing a stalled pontoon back to shore. His impact on those around him was profound, as he touched many lives with his compassionate spirit.
Described as a person who embodied goodness and altruism, Ruge’s untimely passing on February 18, 2024, deeply saddened his friends and colleagues. Despite the loss, the community fondly remembers his numerous contributions and the positive influence he had during his time with them.
Ruge, a graduate of Wabasha-Kellogg Public School and MSU Mankato, served as a dedicated member of the Burnsville Police Department. Tragically, he was one of the three first responders involved in the incident that fateful Sunday morning. The loss of Ruge, along with Burnsville officer Paul Elmstrand and another responder, left a void in the hearts of many.
