CULLMAN, Ala. – The annual Relay for Life event in Cullman, a significant fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 27, at Depot Park from 5-10 p.m. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event in Cullman, originating in 1994.
Beyond being a fundraising initiative, Relay for Life plays a vital role in supporting cancer research and offering crucial services to patients. Helen Allen, the event lead of Cullman County Relay for Life’s committee, emphasized the impact of the funds raised on research and patient services. The American Cancer Society, through the support of events like Relay for Life, has been instrumental in numerous cancer breakthroughs and advancements in early detection and treatment methods.
The upcoming Relay for Life event is anticipated to feature a range of activities aimed at celebrating life, honoring survivors, and standing in solidarity with those battling cancer. The event will commence with an opening ceremony hosted by Tim Kelly, followed by guest speaker Hannah Adams, a pediatric cancer survivor from Middleburg, Alabama, sharing her inspirational journey. Survivors will also share their stories as they embark on their laps around the track.
Attendees can expect live performances by Lee and Em, engaging competitions like a lip-sync battle, and various activities at team campsites. A dedicated “Kids Korner” will offer entertainment for younger participants, including a bounce house, slide, and face painting.
Throughout the park, team campsites will showcase items for sale to raise funds, along with raffle opportunities for attendees. A special quilt made from Relay for Life shirts will be raffled off to a lucky donor.
Continuing the success of previous years, a car show organized by Jeff Harris will be open for attendees, welcoming vehicle entries with a donation fee supporting Relay for Life. Food enthusiasts will have a selection of offerings from local food trucks to enjoy during the event.
A poignant moment during the Relay for Life event is the Survivor’s Celebration Lap, where survivors share their experiences and receive community support. The luminaria service, held at 9 p.m., is a solemn ceremony honoring those affected by cancer.
The event also includes a Survivor’s Breakfast on April 24 and a Survivor’s Dinner on the event day, providing survivors with opportunities for camaraderie and support.
