Remembering a Stalwart of Dracut

Last autumn, Dracut was cloaked in mourning following the death of Harry Curtis, who left behind a legacy of profound community engagement after passing away on November 13, 2023, at the age of 71. More than just a longtime inhabitant, Harry’s profound influence permeated throughout Dracut due to his extensive 32-year career in law enforcement, followed by a vital role within the School Department. His endeavours reached well beyond his official duties, deeply impacting both the youth and adults of the community.

Dedicated to Public Service and Family

Originating from Portland, Maine, Harry’s family settled in Dracut where he later graduated from the local high school. His commitment to civic duty propelled him to earn a master’s degree in criminal justice administration from Western New England College, which underscored his tenure at the Dracut Police Department. As a patrolman and community officer, Harry was instrumental in founding the Junior Police Academy, demonstrating his profound commitment to fostering the community’s future leaders.

Lasting Memories and a Powerful Legacy

Over nearly two decades, my connection with Harry, through his wife Cyndy at the middle school where I taught, showed his family-oriented nature. I vividly remember when he assembled a collage of photographs celebrating his son Andrew’s achievement into the National Junior Honor Society—an act that showcased his immense familial pride. His efforts to include a snapshot of Andrew playing baseball in a historical book about Dracut, although not ultimately featured, exemplifies his deep pride and support for his family, making a lasting impression on all who knew him.
