Copenhagen-based [ppp1] has acquired the global rights to the highly anticipated film “Life and Other Problems” at the 21st Festival. The trailer for the film has been unveiled by Variety.
The whimsical existential movie, directed by Danish documentarian (known for “Amateurs in Space”), is being produced by Bullitt Film from Denmark (recipient of Prix Europa for “Absolute Beginners”), in collaboration with Ruben Östlund’s Plattform Produktion from Sweden and Hopscotch Films from the U.K. (known for “Story of Film”). Bullitt and Plattform previously collaborated on the award-winning documentary that secured the special jury prize at the 2023 Sundance festival.
In reference to the acquisition by DR Sales, Kim Christiansen, the executive producer overseeing documentaries and co-productions, expressed admiration for Max Kestner’s longstanding reputation as one of Denmark’s most insightful filmmakers. Christiansen particularly praised Kestner’s previous work, citing the groundbreaking TV series “Blue Collar White Christmas” from 2002 as a personal favorite for its ahead-of-its-time tone and humor.
Christiansen further commented, “It is an honor to collaborate with Max on what is undoubtedly his most exceptional and thought-provoking film to date. ‘Life and Other Problems’ is not only humorous and intelligent but also polemical, destined to ignite discussions wherever it is screened. The film is poised to resonate widely across diverse audiences.”
In “Life and Other Problems,” Kestner embarks on a daring quest for self-exploration and contemplation of existence, a journey inspired over a decade ago by the controversial incident involving the euthanasia of a giraffe. The viral outcry following the public dissection of Marius, a giraffe at the Copenhagen Zoo in 2014, serves as a pivotal moment that prompts Kestner to delve into profound philosophical inquiries.
Through a blend of philosophical musings and insights from esteemed experts such as biologists Karen Lloyd, Eske Willerslev, and Charles Foster, renowned author of “Being a Beast,” Kestner delves into humanity’s perception of life, our ecological role, and our interconnectedness with other species.
Reflecting on the enigmatic demise of Marius, Kestner highlights the inherent human fascination and perplexity surrounding life’s intricate mysteries. He poses fundamental questions about the nature of existence, pondering the balance between chance and intentionality.
Delving into his creative odyssey and philosophical exploration, Kestner acknowledges the inherent limitations of science in addressing existential quandaries traditionally tackled by religion. Nevertheless, he commends the courage and ingenuity of scientists who bravely navigate the realms of uncertainty with empathy and diligence.
Describing the film as a sequence of seemingly impossible scenarios where altruism prevails, Kestner whimsically characterizes it as a manifestation of love in action. He emphasizes that the act of questioning fundamental truths pays homage to human intellect, regardless of individual limitations.
