Peer-to-Peer Students from Dickinson Embark on Educational Journey, Gaining Valuable Life Lessons

DICKINSON, N.D. (KFYR) – Regardless of age, the value of friends is immeasurable, particularly for teenagers, as they play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging, acceptance, and joy. In some cases, friends also serve as motivators, encouraging each other to venture beyond their comfort zones.

At Dickinson High School, an unlikely friendship between Jake Skabo and Evan Wandler blossomed, showcasing the profound impact of companionship. Skabo, a senior at DHS, expressed, “Evan is my closest friend in the entire world,” highlighting the special bond they share. Their friendship originated in the Peer-to-Peer class, an experience that Skabo described as the most enriching educational opportunity he has encountered in his two years of participation.

Within this class, students like Skabo assume the role of mentors to peers like Wandler, providing guidance through the challenges of high school and life while promoting inclusivity. Together, they have forged lasting memories and inside jokes, strengthening their connection. As they bantered about their favorite song, “Pillow Talk,” it became evident how their friendship thrived on shared experiences and mutual appreciation.

Looking ahead to spring, Skabo and Wandler, alongside 35 other mentors and mentees, are eagerly anticipating a trip to Arizona. This excursion, marked by camaraderie and personal growth, symbolizes the culmination of their shared journey within the Peer-to-Peer program.

The upcoming adventure not only promises new experiences but also serves as a platform for honing essential life skills. Melanie Steffan, the advisor for the DHS Peer-to-Peer program, emphasized the educational value of these trips, which offer practical applications of social skills learned in the classroom. Moreover, the trips underscore the significance of friendship and camaraderie, reinforcing the group’s tight-knit bond.

As the Peer-to-Peer group continues to raise funds for their excursion, the community’s support is pivotal. From purchasing “Choose to Include” shirts to making monetary contributions, every effort contributes to the group’s collective goal. Additionally, the group welcomes donations, with checks addressed to Dickinson High School.
