Mastering Coding Skills to Keep Pace with the Evolving Coastal Industry

BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – Coding is a term that’s likely crossed your path, but its intricacies may still remain a mystery to many. As the realm of computer programming expands, a program based in Mississippi is stepping up to meet the demand for coders locally and globally.

Andrew Stamps, the Director of Coast Operations at Mississippi Coding Academies, finds immense satisfaction in witnessing the moment when a challenging concept clicks for his students. At the Biloxi branch of the academy, Stamps focuses on imparting the fundamentals of coding.

“It’s a rewarding experience to witness that ‘aha’ moment when someone grasps a previously unfamiliar concept,” shared Stamps.

Coding, as Stamps elucidates, is the backbone of various technological marvels we encounter in our daily lives, such as the self-checkout kiosks at Walmart. These innovations are made possible by the dedicated individuals who craft the software, underscoring the essence of coding in bringing such systems to life.

Jonathan Pruitt from Biloxi recognized the potential for a career transition upon learning about the coding program’s prospects, spanning from six to 11 months.

“Everywhere you go, you witness the influence of programmed devices, like our indispensable phones, all thanks to the work of programmers,” noted Pruitt. “By mastering coding, you gain a significant advantage in terms of job security.”

Participants like Pruitt benefit from the program’s tuition-free structure, made possible through collaborative efforts between private and public entities. The sole requirement for enrollment is a high school diploma or equivalent qualification.

“Our program’s mission is to identify Mississippi residents who are deeply rooted in the community, cherish it, and comprehend its essence,” stated Stamps. “We aim to equip them with the necessary skills to seamlessly integrate into the local workforce.”

For Alexis Ramsey, a resident of Gulfport, the training has opened doors to a newfound skill set, offering a viable alternative to traditional college education. Ramsey’s aspirations now revolve around web development, a domain she initially knew little about.

The upcoming session, commencing in late February, presents a fresh opportunity for aspiring coders to embark on this transformative journey. Applications for the program are currently being accepted.

As society increasingly relies on technology, the demand for proficient programmers continues to soar, and these budding coders are poised to tackle the evolving landscape.

“Embarking on a new path from scratch may seem daunting, but with only one life to live, why not make the most of it?” reflected Pruitt.

Stamps emphasized the profound impact of understanding the internal workings of devices, noting how this newfound knowledge reshapes one’s perspective on technology.

The Mississippi Coding Academies, now in its third year, not only operates in Biloxi but also extends its training to Jackson, the Golden Triangle area, and Clarksdale.

For those intrigued by the prospect of delving into the world of coding, further details and application information can be found on the program’s website.
