Chocolate Recall Issued Over “Potentially Fatal” Allergy Risks

The FDA issued a recall this week for the “Red Velvet Milk Chocolate Bars” made by Electric City Sweets in Scranton, Pennsylvania, due to potential severe allergic reactions from undisclosed milk content, posing a risk to individuals with milk allergies, as indicated in the recall notice.

This recall is part of a series of recent FDA alerts concerning various food items being withdrawn from the market. The reasons for these recalls vary from unlisted ingredients such as milk or nuts to potential contamination with salmonella or listeria.

The recall was prompted by a customer complaint to the retailer where the product was bought. Despite the allergen information being displayed on the packaging, the ingredient list failed to mention the presence of milk, a violation of regulatory requirements.

The impacted Red Velvet Milk Chocolate Bars were distributed via Electric City Sweets’ website and in stores located in Scranton, Milford (Pennsylvania), Delray Beach (Florida), Marina Del Ray (California), Orlando (Florida), and North Carolina. Specifically, the recall pertains to a 1.75oz milk chocolate bar with Lot 0101461635, Best By Date of 05/16/2025, and Lot 0101542739, Best By Date of 05/29/2025.

To date, no illnesses associated with this issue have been documented. Consumers who purchased these chocolate bars are urged to reach out to Electric City Sweets via phone or their website for further assistance.

In a separate incident earlier this month, multiple food recalls were initiated due to concerns of listeria contamination. The FDA withdrew products like Chicken Street Taco Meal kits, Bacon Ranch Crunch Salad Kits, and soybean sprouts in different states. Symptoms of listeriosis encompass fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Moreover, Zingerman’s Bakehouse in Ann Arbor, Michigan, recalled its Individually Packaged and Zingerman’s Bakehouse Black Magic Brownie 4 Pack on February 9 due to undisclosed walnuts, which could elicit severe allergic responses.
