MINNETONKA, Minnesota — A teenage resident of Minnesota is currently in the process of recovering from a harrowing incident that unfolded during a routine drive.
An individual lacking a valid driver’s license collided with Lauren Olson’s SUV as she was making her way back home on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Olson was executing a left turn off Highway 7 in Minnetonka when her vehicle was unexpectedly struck by another car, resulting in a collision of significant intensity.
WCCO’s Ubah Ali visited Hopkins High School to interview Olson’s lacrosse coach and the varsity co-captains, Avery Shaw, Tori Katzenmeyer, and Ella Perry, who are still grappling with shock and disbelief.
Reflecting on the incident, Katzenmeyer expressed, “It was a regular day for her, waiting at the stoplight to turn left and unwind at home when the unexpected collision occurred.”
Even three days later, the aftermath of the traumatic crash remains palpable. Shaw remarked, “It feels incredibly unjust that this happened to her.”
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver ran a red light. Additionally, it was disclosed that the driver had a revoked license and a history of at least 12 traffic violations since 2014.
In an update on CaringBridge, Olson’s family revealed that despite undergoing several surgeries, she remains in a medically induced coma to facilitate her brain’s recovery process.
As Olson continues her courageous battle, Hopkins lacrosse coach Jonathan Smart emphasized that the team is diligently preparing for her eventual return.
Smart articulated, “Our current focus is on ensuring the well-being of the other team members as we eagerly anticipate the return of one of our own.”
He further mentioned that discussions among the coaching staff and team captains are centered on establishing a supportive environment for Olson both on and off the field. Smart affirmed, “Upon Lauren’s comeback, we will have measures in place to assist her seamlessly.”
Katzenmeyer expressed optimism, stating, “This experience will undoubtedly make us stronger, and we are committed to dedicating our efforts to her speedy recovery, knowing that she will be with us every step of the way.”
Furthermore, the account of a bystander who rushed to aid Olson mere moments after the accident was captured on video. Subsequently, a group of around twelve strangers also came forward to offer assistance. Employing a knife to deflate the airbags and a crowbar to pry open the car door, they provided comfort and aid to Olson in her distress.
Dan Griep, one of the initial responders at the scene, highlighted the hazardous nature of the intersection on Highway 7 where the collision transpired. Griep expressed hope for potential improvements, stating, “The speeding vehicles, poor visibility, and overall layout of the area raise concerns for me. I am optimistic that authorities will address these issues and implement necessary changes.”
