Reflecting on a Century: Vernon’s Journey Through the Greatest Generation

Vernon, CT — Instead of symbolizing a grand country fair, a prominent E marked a special occasion on Thursday, serving as a tribute to a respected long-time resident of Vernon who dedicated himself to serving his country admirably.

Ed Sumski, a resident of Vernon, embraced every moment of his 101st birthday celebration at the Vernon Senior Center.

Expressing his thoughts, Sumski shared, “I had hoped to live up to 96, as that’s always been my lucky number.” Remarkably sharp, he reflected, “I woke up on my 96th birthday feeling apprehensive because I had achieved my goal. Yet, here I am at 101.”

Surrounded by a crowd at the senior center, Sumski delighted in a cake crafted in the shape of a large E, while proudly displaying a sizable badge, a gift from his daughter Jan Getz, showcasing the remarkable span of his life.

Sumski embodies the spirit of the Greatest Generation, having experienced significant historical events. Born when Babe Ruth’s contract was sold to the Yankees, he weathered the challenges of the Great Depression, served in World War II, and later applied his military expertise at Pratt & Whitney. A resident of Vernon since 1964, Sumski holds his service record in high regard, having served as a mechanic for the U.S. Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater during the war, with extensive time spent in the Philippines.

Recalling his wartime experiences, Sumski shared, “I was involved in servicing all types of planes, accompanying the army wherever they went.” He recounted being en route to Japan for invasion twice, only to be called back due to the atomic bomb, a twist of fate he acknowledges as saving his life. Despite the conflict, Sumski fondly remembers the Japanese people he encountered, describing them as remarkably kind and friendly, a stark contrast to their wartime portrayal.

His daughter Jan shared that living with Ed has brought forth a constant stream of stories, each cherished as a testament to a life well-lived, including driving a car until just two years ago. Describing him affectionately, she remarked, “He’s a good guy.”

As they eagerly anticipate his 102nd birthday, Ed, Jan, and the entire senior center community look forward to celebrating another milestone with the beloved Vernon resident, Ed Sumski.
