After leading Great Britain to victory over France in a thrilling match, former champion Emma Raducanu expressed that she is currently showcasing the “best tennis” of her career.
Raducanu’s remarkable performance, coming back from a set down to defeat France’s Diane Parry with a scoreline of 4-6 6-1 7-6 (7-1), secured a decisive 3-1 lead for Britain and secured their place in the finals for the first time since hosting the competition in 2022.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Raducanu shared, “Tennis-wise I have improved because I feel like I am playing the best tennis of my career and my life. To come through the moments that I did the last two days it took a strong character when the whole stadium is pretty much against you.”
Since her sensational victory at the 2021 US Open, Raducanu has faced challenges with form and fitness, undergoing surgeries on both wrists and one ankle in May 2023. Her absence from major tournaments like the French Open and Wimbledon last year marked a period of recovery and rehabilitation.
Participating in consecutive three-set matches during the Billie Jean King Cup was a significant milestone for Raducanu as she aims to climb back up the rankings from her current position as the world No. 302.
Reflecting on her recent performances, Raducanu stated, “To be able to put two matches like that back-to-back, three sets on clay against really tough opponents, it’s just testament to the work we’ve been doing. I knew it would pay off eventually, so I’m very pleased this weekend it was able to show.”
The British team faced a tough challenge playing France on clay courts, especially after teammate Katie Boulter’s defeat in the opening match. However, Raducanu’s resilience and determination turned the tide in their favor, culminating in a historic win and securing their spot in the Billie Jean King Cup finals.
Great Britain’s captain Anne Keothavong praised the team’s outstanding performances, emphasizing their unity and hunger for success. She expressed her belief that the team rightfully deserves their place in the finals, highlighting the players’ dedication and teamwork throughout the competition.
