PARAGOULD, Ark. (KAIT) – A recently approved medication by the Food and Drug Administration is demonstrating groundbreaking advancements in medical treatment.
At the forefront of this transformative healthcare is a hospital in Region 8, where patients are experiencing the positive outcomes firsthand.
Norma Lee, a resident of Cushman, expressing her struggles with the disease, stated, “I’m always doing something, so this disease has really put me down.” Every two weeks, she makes the journey to Arkansas Methodist Medical Center, where she receives care.
Despite being 80 years old and enjoying activities like quilting and cross-stitching, Lee found herself repeatedly asking her daughters the same questions, a sign of her Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis.
Reflecting on her mother’s own battle with the disease, Lee shared, “She (her mother) completely lost the use of her legs and didn’t know who I was.”
Witnessing her mother’s decline, Melanie Williams, Lee’s daughter, recalled the heartbreaking moments and the fear of facing the same fate.
Driven by the desire to find a solution, Williams and her sister embarked on a quest for effective treatment options as Lee’s condition worsened, causing her to lose interest in her beloved hobbies.
Dr. Ron South introduced Leqembi, also known as Lecanemab, a newly approved drug targeting mild dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease, to Lee’s treatment regimen. This amyloid-beta-directed antibody medication has brought hope to patients like Lee, offering a chance at improved quality of life.
As a neurologist at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center, Dr. South emphasized the significance of Leqembi’s mechanism of action, distinguishing it from previous treatments that focused on neurotransmitters. By targeting toxic components in the brain, the medication aims to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and alleviate symptoms.
Patients like Dolores Magee from Walnut Ridge, who have undergone Leqembi treatment, have reported positive experiences with minimal side effects, highlighting the potential benefits of this innovative approach.
