DO THAN, Alabama (WTVY) – The family of a woman who was fatally shot shared their perspective on the tragic event. Authorities suspect that an individual known to the victim, Dixie Shirah, was responsible for her death and subsequently tried to conceal the crime.
The process leading to the arrest of John Allen Kolkman, the alleged perpetrator, was prolonged. Despite his apprehension, Dixie Shirah’s loved ones continue to grapple with the aftermath of the loss.
Describing Dixie as amiable and generous, her family emphasized her kind-hearted nature. “She possessed a heart of gold and exuded care and sociability,” remarked Amy Mahan, Dixie’s mother.
The untimely demise of Dixie Shirah occurred recently. Initially appearing as a possible suicide, law enforcement’s scrutiny revealed inconsistencies in the narrative. Subsequently, John Allen Kolkman was charged with manslaughter. Mahan vividly recalled the moment she received the devastating news of her daughter’s passing.
“On a Monday morning, we had a conversation and sensed that something was amiss. When the detective’s call came through, I was rendered breathless. It felt as though someone had torn out my soul,” Mahan expressed.
At 28 years old, Dixie Shirah was a mother of two, recognized in her community primarily for her employment at Waffle House. Her affable nature drew people to her, and her adventurous spirit was equally noteworthy.
“Dixie expressed an interest in marksmanship. We began with a small BB gun, shooting targets from varying distances. We progressed to a .22 caliber and eventually to larger firearms in my possession,” shared Jimmy Shirah, Dixie’s father.
Being in Dixie’s presence was akin to basking in a radiant light of joy, according to Jimmy Shirah, who cherished memories with Dixie and her siblings.
“I taught them all how to drive. I entrusted them with my truck to navigate through the woods and learn the ropes. Occasionally, I joined them in the vehicle, and amidst the trees, they encountered a few bumps,” Shirah reminisced.
The investigation into Dixie’s tragic death remains ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges not being ruled out by the authorities.
“I am eager to understand the circumstances that led Dixie to that location with those individuals. They were not her usual circle of friends. I question whether my daughter was targeted,” Mahan voiced her concerns.
Meanwhile, the accused, John Kolkman, is currently held in custody under a bond set at 1.5 million dollars.
The Shirah family expressed gratitude towards the Dothan police department and the lead investigator, Terry Nelson, for their dedicated efforts.
