Pausing Life Off the Beaten Path

With just 2 weeks remaining before embarking on the Appalachian Trail, thoughts inevitably turn to the individuals and things that will be missed during this grand adventure. If all proceeds as planned, the final poker night with the boys has already taken place, farewells have been bid to friends and family, and subscriptions are nearing their end while the last of the gear and supplies are en route. While certain belongings can be stored away and new Netflix shows await upon return, many aspects of life cannot simply be paused for 6 months. Just as I anticipate personal growth from this trail experience, I am mindful that the loved ones, including pets, will also evolve in my absence.

Pre-Trail Jitters and Last-Minute Preparations

Unexpectedly, a flutter of butterflies has taken residence in my stomach this past week. Despite smoothly navigating the gear acquisition process and feeling assured in my preparations, the surge of excitement is now playing tricks on me. I oscillate between eagerness to commence the journey and a desire for more time to ready myself.

Opting out of mail drops or a detailed day-to-day itinerary, I find myself with minimal adjustments to make as I await the commencement date. Scaling back on intense physical training to mitigate the risks of injury, stress, and muscle soreness before departure affords me ample opportunity to accommodate my fears within the confines of my pack.

Refinements in my gear selection continue as I strive to shed weight where possible. The upcoming week is dedicated to finalizing every detail, including the initial food supplies. The only item subject to potential changes until reaching Atlanta is the stove fuel. Hopefully, a sense of purpose will help pacify those fluttering nerves!

Recalling the Purpose

Each individual on the trail embarks on their own journey for personal reasons, and I find solace in revisiting and honing my own motivations. When discussing this topic, I often stumble through a list of points that seem inadequate. Internally, however, my purpose is crystal clear—I aim to encounter the person I have evolved into upon completing the trail.

Fundamentally, I believe our identities are shaped by our life experiences. The trail promises new trials and delights each day, offering ample time for reflection and absorption of these encounters. This expedition serves as a personal retreat—a quest to explore, discover, and forge connections with both the inner self and the external world.
