MOORHEAD — Soon, downtown Moorhead will welcome a new tiki bar called Starbird Lounge.
Shannon and Adam Wiedman, the co-captains of this venture, are preparing for a midsummer debut of this tropical-themed establishment for refreshing beverages at 817 Center Ave.
Having visited several tiki-style bars over time, the couple felt inspired to bring this concept to the Fargo-Moorhead region.
Impressed by the ambiance and the craftsmanship behind the unique drinks offered at such bars, Shannon expressed their desire to introduce a similar experience locally. They envisioned the concept and design of the bar, nurturing the idea over time.
The anticipated opening of Starbird Lounge is slated for midsummer 2024 in downtown Moorhead.
Starbird Lounge, located across from Mick’s Office bar and restaurant on Center Avenue, is strategically positioned amidst neighbors like the Armory Event Center and the upcoming Armory Annex, a smaller event venue. Adam believes these neighboring establishments will contribute to increased foot traffic in the area.
Adam emphasized the significance of the location selection, expressing confidence in the revitalization efforts in downtown Moorhead. The couple had been scouting locations for several years, aiming to be part of the downtown resurgence.
The ongoing redevelopment of the Moorhead Center Mall area and the upcoming 11th Street railroad underpass project are expected to generate further interest and buzz in the vicinity, according to Shannon.
Adam, the owner of Weidman Design Co (WDCo), a branding and graphic design firm in Moorhead, and Shannon, an employee at CoSchedule in downtown Fargo, are excited about the culinary offerings at Starbird Lounge. While the menu is still in the works, they plan to offer snacks and basic bar food. Additionally, they intend to collaborate with food trucks and local Moorhead restaurants for delivery services.
The couple envisions Starbird Lounge as a destination primarily for drinks, with food options serving as a complementary attraction.
The name “Starbird Lounge” originated from a playful conversation between Shannon and Adam, inspired by nautical terms like port and starboard. The term “starbird” caught their attention and eventually became the chosen name for their establishment.
The lounge’s decor will exude a tropical vibe with a touch of mid-century modern aesthetics, featuring cozy seating arrangements such as large half-circle banquettes. The ambiance will foster intimate conversations and relaxation, devoid of televisions, encouraging patrons to savor their drinks and engage in meaningful interactions.
Approximately a quarter of the drink menu will cater to non-alcoholic or low-alcohol-by-volume options, appealing to guests seeking innovative and thoughtful alternatives beyond the traditional cocktail offerings.
