The workshop at Karmic Konnection on April 20 will focus on mindfulness, thriving, and resiliency, led by retired Judge Victor Reyes.
What Does the Thriving Class Entail?
Reyes often observes that people tend to choose paths that lead nowhere, lacking guidance on coping mechanisms. He emphasizes the importance of understanding emotions, self-compassion, and recognizing human emotions without perceiving them as weaknesses.
Reyes encourages his students to delve into their own minds, examining self-perceptions and reactions. By fostering awareness, individuals can identify habits to maintain or cultivate and behaviors to emulate for personal growth.
Participants reflect on their skills and contemplate how they can contribute to making the world a better place.
Reyes recalls an incident in an elementary school class where a student expressed self-doubt about their kindness. Another student intervened, citing an instance where the first student’s compliment had a positive impact. Reyes emphasizes that people often embody positive traits without realizing it.
Impact of Reyes’ Teachings on Prisoners
Reyes conducts yoga, meditation, and ethics classes at correctional facilities like the Florence Correctional Institution and LaVista Correctional Facility. His mindfulness training and domestic violence survival sessions at LaVista have benefitted female inmates for eight years.
Through teaching, Reyes gains insights into the inmates’ experiences of trauma, ranging from childhood abuse to domestic violence. He guides them towards self-reflection and achieving balance in their lives, helping them move past self-medication habits.
The Evolution of Reyes’ Journey
Victor Reyes expresses gratitude for the diverse teachings he has received, which have a common theme of human thriving. Transitioning from his judicial career, he discovered practices that brought a positive shift in his perspective, allowing him to celebrate life’s moments rather than feeling overwhelmed.
