PERRY, Iowa — For Shawn Kenney of Perry, juggling a hectic schedule that involves traveling extensively for sports networks would seem like more than enough. However, in addition to his commitments to ESPN and NBC sports, Kenney remains actively engaged in local radio.
Recently, Kenney secured a full-time contract with ESPN, where he will be providing play-by-play commentary for football, basketball, and wrestling. When he is back in Perry, he dedicates his time to supporting his children’s basketball games at Perry High School or fulfilling roles in sales and play-by-play duties at KDLS radio station.
Despite the demanding nature of his dual roles, Kenney values the connection he has with Perry and the radio station. He expressed, “Not a lot of sleep with both jobs, but yeah that is something that was important to me because Perry is important to me, and this radio station is important to me.”
The significance of home life became even more apparent to Kenney on January 4, 2024, when a tragic shooting occurred at the school. Reflecting on that dark day, Kenney shared, “To be here and hug my family during that moment, and hug neighbors in the community… Certainly what was one of our darkest hours that we’ve ever experienced.”
Upon confirming the safety of his family, Kenney immediately headed to the radio station to offer his assistance. He highlighted the collaborative spirit at the station, where colleagues support each other across various departments, whether it be sales, news, or sports coverage.
In times of crisis, Kenney stepped up to provide updates to the community by attending news briefings and ensuring that the public remained informed. His presence even caught the attention of viewers as he was featured on cable news during a news conference regarding the tragedy.
Beyond crisis management, Kenney dedicates his time to assisting clients with their advertising needs and delivering play-by-play commentary for local high school sports events.
Kenney’s journey in the broadcasting industry began at KDLS right after his graduation from the University of Iowa. His part-time involvement with ESPN stemmed from a connection with Jim Gibbons, the former head wrestling coach at Iowa State University, who recommended him for coverage of the NCAA wrestling championships.
His versatility in calling different sports led to an expansion of his roles at ESPN, eventually culminating in a full-time position. Kenney also embraces opportunities to cover wrestling events internationally with NBC sports, showcasing his passion for the sport.
Working alongside various analysts at ESPN, Kenney had the chance to collaborate with Jess Settles, a prominent figure in Iowa basketball. Despite initial intimidation, Kenney found Settles to be a down-to-earth and influential ambassador for the state of Iowa.
Despite his extensive travel and high-profile assignments, Kenney finds fulfillment in his work at KDLS, especially in the heartwarming moments shared with listeners, particularly those in nursing homes who appreciate the local sports coverage.
