SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The passing of country music icon Patsy Cline was commemorated earlier this week, marking 61 years since her untimely death.
A Springfield resident shared a special bond with the renowned singer, intertwining her presence with our ‘Ozarks Life’ on several occasions and informing us of her tragic demise.
Jaynie Chowning fondly reminisces about her father, Si Siman, describing him as a person with an innate talent for recognizing potential in individuals and fostering their skills.
From a young age, Si demonstrated entrepreneurial flair, a quality that defined his character throughout his life. His network and affiliations enabled him to arrange musical performances for KWTO radio and later on television with the advent of the medium. Leveraging his connections, he curated the lineup for Ozark Jubilee on KY3.
Jaynie recalls the excitement generated among stars invited to Springfield, as the Grand Ole Opry initially underestimated the impact of television. Si’s initiatives not only attracted luminaries like Red Foley but also introduced emerging talents such as George Jones and the sensational Patsy Cline to a national audience.
Patsy’s appearance on Jubilee showcased her already shining stardom, captivating audiences with her mesmerizing voice and formidable presence.
Apart from his endeavors in Springfield, Si also conducted business in Nashville. It was in this city that a tragic event unfolded four years after Patsy’s performance on Jubilee. Si found himself in Nashville at the fateful moment when the plane carrying Patsy Cline and three others crashed.
Seizing the opportunity to report on the incident for KWTO, Si’s coverage reflected a personal connection to the artists involved. His poignant narration of the crash underscored the loss of recording stars Patsy Cline, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Cowboy Copas, and pilot Randy Hughes.
The radio report conveyed Si’s emotional investment in the story, emphasizing the profound impact of the tragedy on those he knew and collaborated with closely.
