Importance of Water Throughout Life: A Midweek Boost

The Good Samaritan Society-Woodland Campus provides a range of services for the community, including senior living options such as long-term care, independent living, and assisted living apartments. Additionally, they offer in- and out-patient rehabilitation services. The Breath of Life program at the Woodland Campus provides caregiver support through adult day services and respite care. Currently, the campus accommodates 155 residents and serves numerous visitors who avail themselves of the caregiver and rehabilitation services. The dedicated staff at Woodland, consisting of 106 individuals, ensures compassionate care for all residents.

Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining overall health as it plays a vital role in various bodily functions. However, as individuals age, they are more susceptible to dehydration. Factors contributing to this include a decreased sense of thirst and hunger, as well as medications that may lead to dehydration. Moreover, changes in body composition can result in lower levels of hydration. Dehydration can further lead to issues such as confusion and fatigue, increasing the risk of falls.

When the opportunity arose to apply for a grant through Crow Wing Energized, the Woodland staff were thrilled. Recognizing the limited availability of water fountains within the expansive building, they seized the chance to address this issue. With the grant, Woodland acquired a Hydration Station and installed it in a central location. This new addition allows residents, staff, and visitors to conveniently refill their water bottles and maintain proper hydration. Given the emphasis on physical activity at Woodland, with many residents engaging in daily hallway walks, easy access to hydration along the way is essential. The staff, who tirelessly care for others, also benefit from the quick hydration provided by the station.

Woodland invites the public to explore their facilities, which include a beautiful outdoor walking path for use in pleasant weather and extensive hallways for indoor walks. Visitors are encouraged to make use of the new Hydration Station during their visit.

In alignment with its mission to “Improve health and wellness in our community by making the healthy choice the easy choice,” Crow Wing Energized welcomes individuals to learn more about their upcoming classes and events by visiting CrowWingEnergized.org or following them on Facebook.

The Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) collaborates with communities to promote active living, healthy eating, and tobacco-free environments, aiming to prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. By partnering with the community, SHIP enhances opportunities for physical activity, access to nutritious foods, tobacco cessation, workplace wellness, and emotional well-being. Through these efforts, SHIP contributes to the creation of healthier communities and helps individuals in Minnesota lead longer, healthier lives, thereby reducing preventable healthcare costs.
