Honors Awarded to Streator Paramedic and Firefighters for Life-Saving Rescue

Eight members of the Fire Department and EMS were commended on Wednesday for their courageous efforts in rescuing a resident of Streator and saving their life.

During the city council meeting, Fire Capt. Ryan Reynolds, Capt. Fred McClellan, Lt. Tim Redd, firefighter Ian Rogers, firefighter Edward Levy, firefighter TJ Renner, firefighter Russell Callahan, and paramedic Michael White were honored with a city proclamation for their life-saving actions.

Mayor Tara Bedei expressed gratitude for the heroic actions of the first responders, emphasizing that their swift response ensured the victim’s survival and complete recovery from any potential harm, transforming what could have been a tragic incident into a positive outcome.

The incident unfolded on January 1 when firefighters received a call about a microwave fire at 410 N. Shabbona St. Upon arrival, the first responders encountered significant smoke emanating from the second floor. A resident informed Reynolds about another resident trapped on the second floor.

The initial team entered the building with a hose line, braving intense heat and poor visibility on the second floor. Levy located the victim in a bedroom, and together with Callahan, successfully extricated the individual while Reynolds managed the fire. McClellan and Rogers assisted in moving the victim downstairs, where Renner joined in the resuscitation efforts.

Redd facilitated the water supply and aided paramedic White in preparing the necessary medical equipment for the victim’s transport to the hospital. Despite the challenging conditions, the collaborative efforts of the team ensured the victim’s safe transfer to the ambulance and subsequent journey to OSF Center for Health-Streator, where the victim arrived alert and responsive to medical staff.

The proclamation highlighted the selfless actions of the firefighters and paramedics who prioritized the safety and well-being of others above their own, culminating in the successful rescue and recovery of the victim.

In a heartwarming moment, each firefighter and paramedic was individually recognized by Mayor Bedei and Fire Chief Gary Bird, receiving a standing ovation from the audience at City Hall in acknowledgment of their bravery and dedication to serving the community.
