Kickstarter Campaign Launched by Author to Publish Comprehensive Mass Guide

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (OSV News) — Dan Gonzalez, an author hailing from Miami, humorously expressed his anticipation for the release of his book after three decades of meticulous preparation. He likened the feeling to preparing for a long-awaited party, unsure if anyone would attend.

Gonzalez’s journey towards writing “Mass Explained” began during his college years, where a profound encounter ignited a newfound exploration of his faith and sowed the seeds for this upcoming publication.

“Mass Explained” delves into the etymology of words and phrases integral to the Mass, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of each facet of the liturgy. Comprising 43 chapters, the book provides a chapter synopsis, 15 review queries, and three reflective discussion points at the conclusion of each section.

Designed for a diverse audience including cradle Catholics, converts, educators, students, homeschoolers, parish groups, and parents, “Mass Explained” aims to cater to anyone seeking a deeper comprehension of the Mass.

To bring his vision to fruition, Gonzalez opted for self-publishing and initiated a Kickstarter campaign on his website, https://www.massexplained.com, with a fundraising target of \(8,000. The campaign, running until Feb. 28, offers preorders of the book at \)48 per copy.

Gonzalez’s collaboration with the Diocese of Little Rock played a pivotal role in the book’s development. The utilization of imagery from the diocesan archives, alongside photos captured by Arkansas Catholic freelance photographer Travis McAfee, enriched the visual narrative of “Mass Explained.”

Reflecting on his personal journey, Gonzalez, raised in a Catholic household by Cuban immigrants, shared his evolution of faith from attending Mass with his family to exploring other denominational practices during his college years. His return to the Catholic faith was marked by a profound sense of homecoming and spiritual reconnection.

Driven by a desire to prevent others from undergoing a similar spiritual crisis, Gonzalez embarked on an in-depth exploration of the Mass’s historical underpinnings. His educational pursuits in ecclesial history and sacramental theology, coupled with extensive research and graphic design expertise, culminated in the creation of “Mass Explained.”

Endorsed by Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami, “Mass Explained” received accolades for its adherence to Catholic doctrine and its potential to deepen readers’ engagement with the Eucharistic mysteries. Archbishop Wenski praised the book as a timely resource amid efforts to foster a Eucharistic Revival within the U.S. Church.

For Gonzalez, the Mass now stands as the focal point of his life, imbuing his roles as a father and husband with profound meaning and fulfillment.
