Real-life Acapella Sensation: Vocal Intensity Channels “Pitch Perfect” Magic

The movie “Pitch Perfect,” released in 2012, was a massive success at the box office, introducing audiences to the realm of acapella music. Vocal Intensity, the coed acapella group on campus, embodied the essence of the film in real life.

During a recent rehearsal, the group kicked off their session by rearranging the room, forming a circle with chairs. Standing in their designated spots, the members exuded vibrant energy as they sang, danced, and shared moments of joy together.

Their repertoire included renditions of popular tracks like Taylor Swift’s “Don’t Blame Me” and JVKE’s “Golden Hour,” showcasing their vocal prowess and ability to harmonize seamlessly.

Logan Peters, a dedicated member of Vocal Intensity, likened the group to the acapella ensembles depicted in “Pitch Perfect.”

“Imagine a traditional choir infused with pop music elements and a touch of choreography,” Peters explained. “It’s all about creating a visually appealing musical experience.”

Established in 2015, Vocal Intensity stands as the sole acapella group on campus, engaging in the creation, arrangement, rehearsal, and performance of diverse music genres. They actively participate in various events, from hosting their concerts to entertaining audiences at smaller venues in the vicinity.

Many members, including the group’s president, had prior experience in choirs and musical ensembles during their high school years. Joining Vocal Intensity was a way for them to continue their musical journey, even if it wasn’t their primary career pursuit.

“I knew that pursuing my major wouldn’t involve music courses, so joining Vocal Intensity seemed like a fun opportunity to explore, and I ended up falling in love with it,” shared Kylee Worner, the group’s president.

Worner emphasized that acapella groups like Vocal Intensity offer a fresh perspective on musical performances, diverging from conventional norms. Their recent focus on pop and R&B music has attracted a larger audience, infusing their concerts with choreographed routines, solo performances, and innovative music mashups to establish a more engaging and relatable connection with their listeners.

Reflecting on their recent performances, Aalliyah Plass, the vice president of Vocal Intensity, expressed, “The reception we received while performing a Rihanna mashup last semester was electrifying. The energy from the audience was unparalleled, creating an unforgettable experience for us.”

Comprising students with diverse academic backgrounds ranging from marketing to psychology, Vocal Intensity prides itself on being an inclusive space for individuals with varying levels of musical experience. The group’s camaraderie fosters deep friendships among its members.

“We’re essentially a tight-knit group of best friends. Our bond is strong, and making music together is what truly unites us,” Plass remarked.

This year, Vocal Intensity is gearing up to compete at the International Championship of Collegiate Acappella (ICCA), the prestigious competition featured in “Pitch Perfect.”

The ICCA spans from January to April, following a bracket format encompassing quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. With approximately 450 competing groups, the finals are set to take place at the renowned Beacon Theatre in New York City, as detailed on the Varsity Vocals website.

After submitting an audition video, Vocal Intensity secured a spot in the regional quarterfinals at Case Western University on March 2. Competing against 10 talented teams, the group aims to clinch the top positions to advance to the semifinals.

Reflecting on their aspirations, Plass expressed optimism, stating, “While we missed out on the final round last year, I have a good feeling about our chances this year.”

Participating in the ICCA serves as a platform for Vocal Intensity members to showcase their talents on a grand scale and receive acknowledgment for their dedication. It underscores the competitive nature of the arts, emphasizing the skill and objectivity involved in musical performances.

Drawing inspiration from the innovative approach of the Barden Bellas in “Pitch Perfect,” Vocal Intensity continues to push boundaries by incorporating remixes and mashups into their performances, carrying forward the legacy of acapella music in a real-world setting.

With a diverse mix of personalities within Vocal Intensity, the group thrives on harmony and unity. Through their shared passion for music, they have cultivated lasting friendships and a supportive community that resonates deeply with each member.
